The Salon __GRANT FLEMING, Begin Early It is necessary to make an early start if the teeth are to last a life-time, and if pain, dis- comfort and ill effects of den. tal infections are to be avoided. The crowns of the temporary teeth are practically formed when the child is .born. The quality of the teeth depends chiefly upon diet, so the diet of the mother during pregnancy and while she is nursing her baby determines what kind of teeth her baby will have for his first set. The teeth are hard, bone-like structures whose crown or grind- ing surface is covered by enamel. Under the enamel, and forming the body of the tooth, we find dentine, a substance which is softer than the enamel and which readily decays. In the centre of the dentine is the pulp, a canal containing the arteries, veins and rierves which nourish the teeth and keep them alive. The years of growth are the most important period of life. During these years, the body is served chiefly by the temporary teeth, which are thus of great importance and should never be neglected. The temporary teeth are a necessary part of the child's digestive system; they are used to chew food and mix it with saliva. " Neglect of the temporary teeth causes discomfort and pain. The first teeth should be allowed to remain in the mouth until nat- ure removes them by the nat- ural process, because not only are they used for chewing, they also hold the space requir- ed for the permanent teeth. Pre- mature removal of the temporary teeth means erowded, irregular permanent teeth. Decayed temporary teeth are very apt to injure the permanent teeth whieh replace them. If they are infected. they may poison! and so injure the body. The child who has painful teeth cannot chew his food properly and, as a result, he will suffer in his nut- rition. TR The first permanent teeth-- four in number--appear about the sixth year and are known as the six-year molars. They should not be confused with the tem- porary teeth and must be given special care, because if they are lost, they are lost forever. These M.D. but | OF THE y Ganabian Bledical Association Xdited by ~ ASSOCIATE SECRETARY | fests hold the other teeth in position while the temporary are being replaced by the perman- ent. The loss of a six-year molar leads to irregularity of the teeth | in that quarter of the jaw where : the loss occurs. | The foundation for strong, | healthy teeth is a proper diet, a | diet which provides the material out of which such teeth ean be I built. Milk, whole-grain cereals, | green vegetables and fruit, used { t in summer and cod liver oil in is needed for building healthy bones and teeth. The gums and teeth need exer- cise as much as do other parts of the body. Crusts and fibrous vegetables supply the exercise requirel. : he teeth should be kept clean by regular brushing, night and morning. Regular visits to the dentist will permit of the early detection of small decayed spots which, if cared for immediately, will prevent any serious damage. Begin early, and help your child to keep his teeth through- out life. | Questions concerning ath, addressed to the Canadian Medical Association, 184 College Street, Toronto, will be answered personally by letter. GROCERIES We are rather proud of the lot of stuff that came in last week's car, because it looks to turn out far better than we thought. There was just one hitch. We announced that it would be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Well the car was not unloaded until Monday and it was well into Wednesday afternoon before the stuff was even half laid out.
