Howes, Minister, "| boxer) Steamship Tickets, and Scan- SPLENDID BOXING PROGRAMME IN PULP MILL HALL (Continued from Page 1) Ralph Jones (Camp 1-B-8) and Geo. Swaine (1-B-7) were next matched and staged three laugh- ter-giving rounds. Facing an opponent of less experience, Swaine (who is an accomplished was in the mood to create a little fun rather than seek a reputation; yet there were flashes of good boxing in this lively bout that won the respect of the crowd. Jones was given the decision because of greater persistence in attack. Billy Doyle and Vernon Mack- ey fought a keen and exciting contest. First one and then the other seemed to have an advan- tage which was evened up the next minute. In each of the three rounds both exerted every effort to put across the winning punch. Towards the end both seemed rather tired, yet neither was able to take advant tage of the other's distress.. As the bell sounded the final = round, the crowd unanimously shouted for a draw, and the referce de- cided accordingly. Louis Sfreddo and Lueck, who followed, were an- other evenly-matched pair, ex- cept as to disposition, Harvey gave every indication to push each advantage to the limit while Louis more than once allowed his opponent opportun- ity 'to recover his composure, and: that restraint cost Louis the decision, which he might have won by a more aggressive attitude. Harry Nischorg and: Arnie Nymark furnished more diver- sion. Harry has had some Winnipeg training, while Arnie --heavier and far stronger, with long flailing arms--had to de- pend on instinct amd pure luck. If Harry had got in the way of some of his haymakers, this story would be a short and simple epitaph. But fate ruled otherwise, and Harry lived to have his right glove upheld by the referee as one more winner. The Stars Appear. And now a pair of real boxers took the stage with the eppear- ance of Charlie Boyle and Jim White. Displaying a judgment and poise hitherto absent, these two went into a contest of skill that was unhurried but stren- uous to a degree. Both having|™ had ring experience in bigger centres with clever opponents, not once did the referee have to interfere or check them. Light- ning fast blows were blocked or evaded, or met with equally fast counters. With equal seren- ity they gave or received blows that would jar an untrained man, a tribute to their physical condition. *» * The feature bout between Miller and Ewing was booked for four rounds--one more than the preceding contests. And the bigh expectations that had been raised were not disappointed, for the exhibition they gave of fast; clean boxing stirred the crowd to enihusiaem, Both were in fine training and mixed it from the start. The bout was marked by lively exchanges in which speed and clever footwork were displayed on both sides. While no decision was allowed, neither could afford to allow the other to best him, in view of the like- lihood of their having to meet in the Winnipeg finals later. Both ended fresh and unwinded. #* and apparently ready to go four| ; rounds more without effort. ; * 3 Lo So ended an unusual pro- gramme. No one was hurt, and only a bleeding nose or two measured the injuries received. And even that is easily avoided where clean living and whole- some exercise have been per- severingly followed in prepara- tion for the contest. Within fifteen minutes after the last bout everyone was back in street garb and smilingly bidding '"'goodnights,"" giving to the evening the desirable happy ending, : OXDRIFT W.
