4 : Qe ° WAR ON THE MOSQUITO Perpetual warfare against mosquitoes, as well as againck (all athey insect bests, is maintained by the Entomo- logical Branch of the Dominion De- partment of Agriculture, For several years the Rocky Mountains, with Banff Alta., as the headquarters, have been accorded special attention in the contro] of the mosquito and has been very suc- cessful. In addition to the oiling of the waters, much ditching, dyking and trail cutting, and sther work of perm- anein nature has been accomplished. Miles of narrow trails have bees cus through dense w= growth to permit of the oiling of otherwise inaccesable places. So much good has resulted that the officers in charge feel Sustif- ed in saying that adverse criticism of the district on account of mosquitoes is a thing of the past. In addition to the work in the Rockies officers of the Entomological Branch are engaged in study of the pest and its eradication in Eastern Canada, particularly around Ottawa & Montreal.. It contains a lower percentage of hull, and may be used to very good advantages as a part of the grain rat- ion for cattle, hogs and poultry. In of corn in many rations. year period, 0.A.C. No. 21 barley has given an average yield of 2084 pounds or 43.4 bushels per acre. Alaska oats and Banner oats, 2092 pounds or 61.0 bushels per acre. Consderng the difference in percentage of hull it may be noted that the barley has produced a greater amount of actual feed value than either the early or late varieties of oats.. In number of days to mature over a five-year period, No. 21 barley requuired 112 days, Alaska oats 115 days and Banner oats 124 days.. This shows that barley requires a shorter time to mature than Alaska oats and is much earlier than Banner oats. In fact it is very rarely that No. 21 barley is damaged by frost in any part of northedn Ontario if it is seeded in reasonable time in the spring. It has also been observed that when cut and *tooked, the barley cures much more apidly than does oats, and this is sarticularly true with regard to dry- ng up after rain. It is very suitable as a nurse crop for seeding down with, and should certainly be grown more extensively 'n the future than it has been in the past. For Sale--6-HOLE STEEL RANGE, in good order.
