Introducing Dick Howa:d "What a rotten shot" The speak- er, a handsome youth of about twenty, leaned on his mashie and glooily watched the golf ball flying through space. Dick Howard, of the British Secret Service was a typical Saxon, with fair curly hair, blue eyes and clean "Guess I was thinking too much a1- bout war, with United States and England ready at ahy minute, to tear at each other's throats, one can't expect to make a good shot at golf, or anything else." What's the latest news, Dick?" asked a voice behind him. Turn. ing around, Dick saw a stout, mid- dle aged man in riding breeches and who carried a riding crop in his hand, 2 "Good morning, squire," said Dick "Nothing much, except that United States refuses to recognize Britain as mistress of the seas. Of course, public hatred is growing in both countries, from jealousy if nothing else." Just then a boy came running up, «Telegram for Dick Howard" he cried and passed a telegram to Dick. After tipping the boy, Dick tore open the envlope, As he read it, his face became serious. "Not bad news, I hope" said Squire Thornton. . "Come to my house and we will read it over." said Dick. Dick and the: Squire walked across the Ever- sley Park golf links and entered Dick's home. Dick immediately led the way to his room Receiving the telegram from Dick the Squire read it. It stated that Colonel Lockhart, the noted invent. or had disappeared on his way from Melbourn to British Guinea. Moreover, valuable papers contain- ing plang of the wonderful Radio, Ray gun had disappeared with him. The message requested Dick to re- port at headquarters as s:on as possible. "Guess Ill have to go," said Dick, "I suppose they will make me chase the beggar." "Well I hope you find him," re- plied the Squire sincerely. "By the way, if war is declared, I wond- er if the Yanks will bomb us here at Winchmore Hill, as we are actu- ally within the outskirts of London, and they'll certainly bomb London." "Not getting chicken hearted al- ready, are you Squire?" laughed Dick. "Oh, no," returned the Squire; "But I'm thinking of my wife." "I don't expect they'll trouble to come this far, anyway' said Dick, "Well, I'll have to go mow, the train leaves in ten minutes. Coming to the station?" "Yes," came the answer, so they both walked out of the house to- wards the station. They arrived there just as the train was coming in, "Well s'long Squire," said Dick as he got on, I'll send you the latest news while I'm on the job."
