EIGHT REASONS FOR MAKING PASTEURI- ZATION OF MILK EFFECTIVE (A Publication of The Ontaric Committee for Safe Milk) Certain municipalities have es- tablished local by-laws which make it necessary for all dealers to sell or distribute pasteurizec milk within their boundaries Some of the reasons for eight oi these municipalities insisting up- on pasteurization are given be low: Toronto The realization that bovine tuberculosis and ether diseases were transmitted by milk from diseased cattle and infected hu- mans to people consuming such milk, prompted the Toronto De- partment of Health, during the years 1910-1915, to bend all their efforts to the establishment of pasteurization. This effort re- sulted in 90% of the milk sold being pasteurized. It was, how- ever, felt that if the maximum of good were to result, all milk offered for sale should be so treated. In 1915, pasteurization was made compulsory. As the Churches ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH Father Belanger, P.P. Sunday: 10 a.m. Holy Mass. 11 a.m, Catechism. 7 p.m. Rosary and Benediction ST. Clarke, Parish Pries' --- | our ideas, our personalities, our direet result of this measure, ris single case of bovine tubereulosis has been traced to milk sold in the City of Toronto since that time. At the present time, 14 out of every 100 in the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto are suffering from various types of surgical tuberculosis of bovine origin. Not one of these cases originated in the City of Toronto. They all came to the Sick Chil- dren's Hospital for treatment irom the country or from muni- cipalities where unpasteurized milk is consumed. Dundas In .1928, the town of Dundas, with a population of 6,137, had! 13 cases of Typhoid Fever. This! outbreak was found to be due to! the use of infected milk from a dairy in which a typhoid carrier was employed. The local authori- | ties, appreciating the value of pasteurization in preventing the| possibility of a recurrence of} such an outbreak, made the sale] of unpasteurized milk illegal. Timmins Ten cases of Typhoid Fever, in! 1928, traced to the distribution | of raw milk, was sufficient war-| rant for the establishing of com-| pulsory pasteurization in this progressive northern community. Chatham In 1927, Chatham, with a pop- ulation of 16,441, had 109 cases of Typhoid Fever and seven deaths. This meant that one out of every 150 citizens of the city contracted Typhoid unnecessar- ily. The cause was inefficient pasteurization in one dairy. This dairy was closed and only re- opened when its pasteurizing plant was working efficiently. Pasteurization to be effective must be carried out with care and under official supervision. Universal pasteurization makes for adequate supervision.
