Princess St. Dryden EIGHT REASONS FOR MAK- ING PASTEURIZATION OF MILK EFFECTIVE (Continued from Page 2) Sturgeon Falls In 1928, Sturgeon Falls adop- ted a local by law making pas- teurization compulsory. This ac- tion was prompted by the occur- rence of 12 cases of Typhoid Fever in the community. These cases were due to the employ- i| ment by one of the local dairies, of a man who had shortly before suffered from an attack of Ty- phoid Fever. Ameliasburg In Ameliasburg, in 1929, there were 17 cases of Typhoid Fever with two deaths. The cause of this epidemic was discovered to be a typhoid carrier who was handling milk shipped to a cheese factory. The evidenee was sufficient to convinee the local authorities of the need of compulsory pasteurization. Belleville In 1930, Belleville rather severely suffered from a Typhoid | epidemic, having 18 cases and 3 | deaths. The cause of this epi- | demic was discovered to be a { milker on a farm of one of the producers. The milk was sold unpasteurized. This milk was a typhoid carrier. One such out- | break was considered by the Belleville City Council to be enough. Compulsory pasteuriza- tion was made effective the same year. Kirkland Lake During 1930. there were more than 400 cases of septic sore throat, with four deaths, in the mining town of Kirkland Lake, in Northern Ontario. Ninety per cent. of those who became ill, used milk from a dairy. which supplied raw milk to consumers. It was found that one cow sup- plying milk to this dairy was excreting an organism known as streptococcus haemolyticus, an organism which was indistinguis- able from the organism found in the throats of the persons who were ill. The epidemic raged unabated until the responsible dairy was closed. Obligatory pasteurization was the natural outcome. From these examples in On- tario, it may be seen that un- pasteurized milk has been res- ponsible for numerous epidemics of disease. If the total numbers of cases of disease and deaths and the loss of money resulting from epidemies due to the con- is sumption of unpasteurized miik- tnherert right to grow up with] 7 EN could be given, they would be| appalling. On the other hand. no epidemic of disease and no ill health has occurred among people from drinking properly pasteurized milk. It would seem obvious, there- fore, that every orgamized com- munity should protect its inhabi- tants from preventable milk- borne disease. It is unthinkable that when once apprized of these facts any communinty or its elected representatives would shoulder the responsibility for depriving its children of their CLASSIFIED COLUMN TO RENT -- FIVE ROOMED House, apply C.
