One bright citizen who overheard a remark that his equanimity had been upset, retorted that he was not alene in that respect for half the equanimities in town had been pushed over! However, outside of that lamentable occurrence, not much damage was done. The basement of Union Church was the scene of a very pretty gathering of thé young people of the Bible class and Sunday School. With the prettily decorated hall, and the attractive costumes of the guests, a very happy evening was spent in the enjoyment of music and games. Union Church Party-- Whist Drive and Dance-- The adherents of St Luke's held a more elaborate affair in the Mill Hall. A whist drive and dance was decided upon to boost the fund fo r their new building, and proved a very successful and enjoyable affair. From eight to ten the tables were filled with enthus- iasts who took a keen pleasure in the seductive pastime. Fourteen hands were played, the following being de- clared the winners: Ladies, Mrs A. Burton; gentlemen, Mr C. Wright; booby prize, Mr F. Foulis. After the card games had been set- tled to the satisfaction of all, dancing was engaged in. A special volunteer orchestra of seven pieces, under the leadership of Mr Risegari, supplied some of the latest and best music for dancing that could be desired. At midnight refreshments were served by the ladies of the W.A., who as usual, saw to it that everybody was properly attended to, after which the dance continued zestfully until about two a.m. : Party at Mrs Cummings-- Dark and mysterious were the rites performed by a small party of Hallow- e'en enthusiasts at Mrs Cummings } asked guests, fantastically garbed, entered, and in a remarkably short time a colonial damsel was tripping about the room to the melody of a waltz with a pierr ot; an old-fashioned lady whirled around with a Tommy; a gypsy lady was paired off with a tramp; whilst "Night" a sable goddess was a fitting partner for the wunder- taker. : During intervals between' dances, the fortune teller--a horrible looking old crone' with a huge crutch -- wag busily engaged with those desirous of tempting fickle fortune. w Just before twelve o'clock a guess- ing contest took: place---to tell by eyes voice gesture and manner to whom a costume belonged. Miss Sybil Shep- herd secured the winning list. Sharp at midnight everyone unmasked, and though the guessing had been keen, there were many surprizes. After a delightful lunch several gentlemen had the surprise of their life in the barber's chair. Ask them! At last th party broke up, and the guests wended their eerie way home- fo to the mournful wails of black cats and the i witches' robes. haunting whisper of HOT DOG. There may be those who dread the coming of winter, to whom the word conveys little but thoughts of long, cold, bitter weather, dull evenings and big fuel bills. To the active among us who believe that life is more than a burden, and who believe things are . pretty much what you make of them, winter promises to be a time of snap and sparkle, with one's blood tingling in the keen air with happy voices ringing free across the snowy fields, and the joy of youth and life surging on every side. | Dryden has a skating rink, fruit of the bright spirits of those who refuse to submit to the gospel of gloom. An appeal for volunteers brought out a little army of willing helpers last . Thursday, and like a work of magic _ the rink sprang up in-an afternoon. Placed at the south end of White St., on the location most convenient, all things considered, for such a struec- ture, the rink this winter promises to be one of the most popular resorts for the young people of the town. I At the meeting of the Council held Tuesday last a motion was adopted by which the town will supply light for the winter, and great is. the jubi- lation of those who have $5ed ith, - Thanksgiving Day THANKSGIVING DAY this year will be observed on Monday, Nov. Tth. By an enactment of the permanently for Monday of the week upon which Armistice Day fails, That: this is a most suitable arrangement s the opinion of the great majority of those who suffered on account of the war. It clears away, too, the uncer tainty that always surrounded holiday when its time was set St year to year by proclamation. Hence in future this day will mean eve: move than ever before to a land that acknowledges God as the author o- every good and perfect gift. In commenting lon the proper ob- servance of Thanksgiving Day, writer suggested that one should rise an hour earlier han usual and guie'l iis a 'think over the things for which he ¥ ought to feel thankful. It will surprise him indeed to note their number and value. It hould mellow his heart to think of others less favored, and the opportunities offered for a kindly turn of some sort. Election matters have not so far aroused any. excitement in Dryden. Outside the natural pride of citizens in. the candidature of one of our own townsimen, not much interest is being taken Mr Kennedy is holding a series of very successful meetings in Kenora and vicinity. After the Keewatin rally on Monday the 7th, he will make a trip through this section, between Waldhof and Ignace. Tt is recognised that the crucial point-of he riding is Por Arhur, where his friends are busy organizing for his coming assault on that Govern- ment stronghold.
