Practically 'nothing was saved. a Carnival Prizes Generous.~ The Carnival Committee feel greatly indebted at the display of goodwill by > the merchants of Dryden, who have so ; generously contributed for the prizes | to be presented at the Big Carnival on February first. The amount is so considerable that the Committee will in making the various St Luke's Annual Meeting-- 'At the annual congregational meet- ing of St Luke's Church, the officers for the year were elected. Mr J. B. Beveridge and Mr H. Humphreys were reappointed rector's and people's war- dens respectively. Mr G. N. Dechert was elected vestry clerk, succeeding Mr J. E. Gibson who has resigned. The former vestry of twelve were again appointed en masse. Messrs J. B. Bev- eridge, H. Humphries and Dr Wood, were appointed delegates to the synod. The financing of the Church for the current year wag discussed, and it was decided to appoint a committee to ar- range for an increased revenue. The loyalty of the members can be depen- ded on to sustain the financial position of St Luke's at a high level. Strike the Lyre-- An observant individual returning from the Co-operative ineeting at Ox- drift last week, was struck by the diversity of material in the coach by which he travelled. The passengers bound for Dryden included a Bishop, a Canon, a member of Parliament, a budding politician, as well as a pop- ular healer. This has no reference to the political heeler, who was not the sole heeler in the crowd, as another soul healer sat opposite--one of the | common or Dryden variety. The com- bination of sole and heel would naturally suggest the upper part oi the boot; but to mention boot-leggin is'to tread on the heels of trouble. Everyone was in good spirits, even ii there were no good spirits in anyone. Looping the Loop-- "While travelling through the bush the Club reception at Mr Cook's Coun- try house on Friday afternoon, Mr L. .Carr was attacked by a huge timber wolf. Although he carried no gun, Mr Carr did not lose his presence of mind. As the ferocious brute rushed at "him with jaws agape, he boldly pushed his hand down its throat and grasping it by the tail he swiftly turned the animal outside in, causing it to continue its rush in the other direction, away from him. = PLEASANT HOURS Sunday morning Jan. 22--The Adult Class of the Union Church. study I. The monthly business meeting of The Rink Committee wishes to take who turned out on Thursday evening, to witness Mr Faulkner's Wonderful exhibition of One Legged Skating. Mr Falkner was so enthuesed at seeing the large gathering, that came to wit- 'ness the performance, that he gave three exhibitions instead of the two i a5 advertised. ds @ ' Lolge Installationg.---- Fhuesday, Jan. 10th, Mrs D. son District Deputy President of the Rebekah Assembly, visited Pelican Rebekah Lodge, Sioux Look- out, and installed the officers for the - present year. 5 . The annual social evening of Dry- den Women's Institute will be held on Thursday, January 26th. A Whist Drive commences at eight o'clock, and will be followed by a dance from 11 to 1, music being supplied by the Ozx- chestra. The modest price of fifty cents pays for everything, including refreshments. Mrs Gibson Resigns-- Mrs J. E. Gibson, who has so long filled the position of organist and choir leader in St Luke's Church, has decided to retire from the rather onerous office. While acknowledging that her long service entitles her to some relief from the strain involved, there will be considerable regret felt regarding the decision. Her standing as a musician, and the sound practice on which the work of the choir has been based, have always made the oral part of St Luke's services ac- ceptable to the better taste of the congregation, as well as occasional worshippers. Although she will take a less active part in the work of the choir, she will still have the opportunity to assist in all matters relating to the musical life of the Church, where her long experience will be valuable and highly appreciated. The new organist, Mr J Gammon, is a welcome addition to local circles, and in his contribution to musical culture in various directions, he is assured every encouragement by all citizens of Dryden. There is said to be no sentiment in business; but once in a while the touch of nature appears in even the most unexpected places: On a slip enclosed with an acknowledgement to a customer, D. W. Scott includes the following touching little gem "THREE WORDS" "There are three words, the sweetest In all of human life-- words "More sweet than are all song of birds Or pages poets preach. "This life may be a vale of tears, A sad and dreary thing-- "Three words, and trouble disappears And birds begin to sing. "Three words will dissipate the gloom And water turn to wine, "Three words will cheer the saddest "I love you?" Wrong by heck. [days "It is another sweeter phrase, "Enclosed find cheque."
