Beaton, Tuesday afternoon. GRASSHOPPER CONTROL Owing to the continued dry, hot weather which we have had during | the latter part of May and the first part of June a large crop of grass- hoppers may be expected, as this { weather is very favorable to their § development as this is the season of the year that the eggs hatch and if! the weather is dry and warm, very few perish at that time. These eggs are laid during the month of August and remain in the ground till spring. They are usually laid in sandy soil along road sides and old pastures. The eggs are laid about an inch be- low the surface and when the warm Spring weather coems these hatch and the young work their way to the surface and at once begin feeding on anything green that may be at hand. Control methods may be carried out by a proper system of crop rotation 50 as to break up old meadows and keep down weeds, this breaks up the eggs in the fall and prevents to a large extent hatching. Control methods however after they are hatched consists of using the follow- ing mixture: Bran 20-1bs Paris Green... 1-1 BYTUD. ities ad iis 2 quarts Three Oranges or Lemons Wtaer oc... ..... 3%:gallons Mix the bran and Paris Greed dry. Add the Syrup, the juice and grated rind of the J.emon or Oranges to the water then wet the bran with this mixture stirring until the bran is This mixture should be scattered very thinly, early in the morning before they start i feeding. This amy be put on pasture 3 | fields or other place where stock are gf | grazing without any harm being done to the stock. The grasshoppers prefer fl | this to theirn green food and in the course of a couple of days, large 2 | numbers will be found dead.
