'In conclusion, I wish to congratulate Dryden on your vigorous campaigns for the erection of a new school and a hospital. When I saw you were mak- ing such effort to raise the necessary funds, I thought it was up to me to do something if at all possible; and I have the assurance of the Premier that he will see to it that we get about $4000 for the hospital: $2000 when construction begins, and the balance some time later." : The Mill Smoker The occasion of the presentation of i the trophies of the 1921 Safety Com- ! petition to the management an em- ! ployees of the Dryden Paper Com. on the evening of July 11th, by Mr A. P. | Costigane, secretary and safety en- i gineer of the Ontario pulp and paper " makers' safety association, was appro- priately celebrated by the holding of a smoker in the paper mill hall. The celebrants foregathered at 8.30 and for the first hour were engaged wth cards and other social games. At half past nine Mr J. B. Beveridge in- troduced Mr Costigane, saying that congratulations for the creditable showing made by the Dryden Paper Co. were due-to the employees rather than to the management. Mr Costigane, after calling atten- tion to the showing of the Company as first in the competition (a total of 24 non-fatal accidents, involving lost! time of 374% working days or 29 days per full time worker) and extending his congratulations, presented to Mr Harry Davidson--who had 'been selec- ted to receive the trophies on behalf (of the employees--a beautifully in- ! scribed silk flag and a magnificent silver shield mounted on wood sawn from a beam taken from the ruins of the original Don Valley mill ---- the first paper mill in Ontario. Upon receiving the trophies Mr Davidson replied in well chosen terms after which Mr Costigane resumed. Disclaiming any of the attributes of a religious instructor, he said he would like to borrow a phrase from scripture, "Am I my brother's keep- er?" The thought had been sugges- ted as he made his way through the mill, and he felt like elaborating it == Raps the Hired Han Dear Sir: -- In a recent issue there appeared under the caption "Frost In the the past have the writer of the article to think of that historic character who, deeming him- June," supposedly written by "Hired Man"--whose writings in sometimes caused self a champion of his people, became so obsessed by the thouzht he even went the length of fighting windmills. We have no record of this feat be- ing of any particular assistance to the but it certainly gave the self-elccted champion considerable cheap arlver- tising. Now I know the average writer, when submitting his "Stuff" to the public press, is inclined to try to be instructive or interesting--some- titres both; state what is not true. He knows that soon the public tires of anything of that kind. We must take exception to that part of the "Hired Man's" article which concerns Dryden Board of Trade, as it is generally agreed (by those who know and are not guessing at facts) that never since its inception has the Board of Trade been more active in promoting the general in- terests of the district. And although the "Hired Man" seems to have had a siesta somewhat resembling the historic © Rip Van Winkle, he will find the get-together meeting did take place in March and with very good results to the whole community. ; Further, we are only quoting a well- known fact, when we state that if you want action you must skip above the smaller officials to get it. There is on record with the Board of Trade a letter from the President of the U.F.O Club of which we believe the "Hired Man" to be Secretary, and this letter very courteously regrets that urgent business prevented the said President from being present at the meeting, but states that he considered the move a good one and heartily endorsed it. ) - Thankin you for space, I remain yours truly W. 'By care, not only in respect to our own safety but our brother's as well, we may prevent untold suffering, keeping down the | Seventies of widows and orphans, and thus contributing to the happiness of those daily and hourly associated with us. It is the duty of every work- man to consider the safety of himself and his fellow workmen of paramount importance, individually, collectively, and to society at large, and to order his daily activities in accord with this view." a = V Mr Costigane's remarks were force- ful and appropriate, and made a deep impression on his hearers.
