wo Volume IV. Dryden, Ont. January 18th 1923 Number 33 A RYDEN PHARMACY A Sure Shot (Bot and Worm remover), ; i ONCE upon a time there was a ) little town that flourished, albeit in a modest fashion, on the banks of a river draining a considerable lake in the heart of the almost un- known territory between the busy east and the striving west ; linking the old and the new; ; standing at the meridian between the spread- ing seas. Yin the huge reservoir just beyond its yard fences there flows the stream that--after turning its wheels, lending power to supply light and motion to its activities-- like the bush that burned yet was not consumed, keeps on with energy undimished to furnish still greater blessings to the cities on the plains beyond, whose indus- tries wait on its coming. Past its front door runs the greatest high-! way of the world's commerce that on rails of steel carries unendingly the merchandise of half a con- tinent, bartering the products of a rich, virgin country for the output of earth's mightiest factories and' the skill of the world's greatest! craftsmen. = So in the very heart of things are we situated who are privileged to call Dryden "home." * kkk Are we then to regard ourselves as an unimportant community, of small influence on the affairs of the great world: or are we the hub' of the universe which must' keep moving forward as a centre,' lest we retard the onward drive of that which lies around us in' the mighty engine of civilization! Many have been the indications of late of a stiffening of the critical fac- ulty in Dryden. Doubtless because of its stuation, it has suffered more than most places from the infliction of self- appointed apostles of various species of super-excellence. It is not a popularly elected body, nor has it executive powers like a Town Council; yet many appear to regard it as a sort of upper-chamber, which should enlarge and supervise the work of the elected representat- 'op the biggest gatherings in the west of --at Winnipeg next week. ives. 'Complaints are sometimes hear 'that nothing has been accomplished by the Board, because it has neglected to launch a water-works and sewer sys- fo tem, for instance, or some such work v for the public good. Such work is strictly the breroga- tive of the Municipal body, and cannot be dealt with by the Board of Trade: a otherwise than in the form, of recom- mendation to the Council. The Board of Trade 'is primarily a volunteer publicity department for the , town, through which questions of gen- jurisdiction of Council, or affecting. outside corporations and municipal A { ities, may be dealt with. Through its . { operations citizens may become pos- sessed of information of municipal advantage, or may in turn spread in- to - the interest of the Town itself. Many who are prone to criticise the effectiveness of a Board of Trade might do themselves, as well as the Board, a considerable amount of good by attending the annual 'meeting and enrolling for the pur 'the general welfare.
