Go op back @ don't have to make your living as paper companies are accomplishing more than any other agent, not even excepting mining companies, in build- fing up and establishng business in the : pioneering communities across the i Dowtinion, Their failure would bring very great economic distress. Yet they will not go on; they cannot go cn with present volume of business unless their 'pulpwool is more effectively protected from destruction by forest fires than has been the case in the past. A pulp and paper company, produe- ing 150,000 ons of newsprint in a year makes 'in each working day enough paper in a strip a foot wide nearly to span the world. Such a company uses around 650 cords of pulpwood every day, more than 200,000 cords in a year. has been in existence about a dozen years and in that time, they have lost as much wood through forest fires as they have transformed into paper, Wealth-producing and wealth-destroy- ing forces have run an equal race in that community. Do you realize what It means that the life of an industry, disribuing beween five tand six million dollars n a commun- ity each year, can be only half as long as it might have been had the destruc- tive forest fires been kept in check. And this case is no exception. Is such such a policy business-like; it it patriotic ? Your reaction, my reader, to this statement is doubtless the usual one. You clrse the government, especially if it is represented by a party holding political views different from those of your own. But only yourself s to blame You are on the recreant to a "public duty and public trust." The Govern- ments represents you and you own the pulpwood forests of the country. Keep Canada's forests green. You are Lucky It is only ten o'clock, but already your feet hurt and you are tired. The heat has crept past electric fan and thick brick wall. You mop your face, wipe your hands, tug at your collar, and wonder if you will be able to stand it till night. ~ Just then you see a sport car filled with golf bags and young wasters rushing to the links. All at once you are dead sure that you will have to quit for the day, because "everybody's loaf- ing anyway." > But before you quit, drive to the nearest foundry. Come on up close to the open window; the heat will burn you, but you can stand a look. Inside they stand it all day. age, stripped to the waist, pushing iron rucks filled with slopping, spitting molten steel. { Come back at five or six o'clock? after your day of loafing and see them come out of their oven, tired with the! tiredness of men whose blood has been Hop into your machine and drive ! along the railroad until you see a see-| -- tion crew at work. limb on top the erade, : i Your feet wince where the heat | "rom steel rails and ties creep through | your shos; your shoulders twitch where | the sun burns through your clothes. A number of formulas for such mixtures against imosquitoes and black-flies, just issued by the Entomological Branch of the Dominion Department of Agriculture. . A mixture recommended by the author s composed of three ounces of oil of vonella, one of spirits of camphor, ne of oil of tar, quarted ounce of oil 4%. six ounces of castor oil. Another mixture cinsists of two ounces of oil of citron- ella, eighth of an ounce of pennyroyal and two ounces of castor oil. The castor oil is included to prevent injury to the skin. Tallow may be used in- stead if it is desired to have the mix- ture in the form of paste. When he insects are abundan it is necessary to apply the mixture at least once every half hour, using liberal quantities and rubbing it thoroughly over the hands and face. Care should be taken to have a suffici- ent quantity of mixture when on an extended trip in the woods. At least an ounce per person per day is neces- sary if the flies are any abundant. The mixture should be carried in a small aluminum flask or screw top tin, but not in a glass bottle as it is apt to break. THE CURING OF HAY A ton of good hay is equal to two tons ofinferior quality or spoiled hay. Now that haying season is approach- 'ing it is well to remember this, as the climate of Northern Ontario is un- certain. In going over several districts during the past two years it was in- deed a sorry sight to see hundreds of tons of hay rotting in the fields, the greater part of which could have been saved had a smaller yield been taken while the weather was good, as it generally is during the month of July. It is true that - the hay crop is not always ready in July and this applies mare to this year than any year since ; this station has been in operation. At the present time it would appear that hay will not be ready before the latter part of July. Thisshould give plenty of time to put mowers and other neces- sary implements im shape for use. The growth of red clover is very heavy in northern districts and the use of a tedder is almost essential. When sufficiently dry the hay should be raked and put up in well-made cocks. Where _ a little extra time is taken in properly f cocking hay, it has been proven at this Station that hay will stand heavy rain and come out in good condition. "Where stacking is resorted to it, it is necessary to have all the hay cocked to allow of the stack being completed and properly topped off without delay, avoiding if a all possible, wet weather when stacking., eW would recommend harvesting a smaller quantity of good hay rather than a large quantity of in- ferior qualiy. Swampscott, Mass, July 28--Con- summation of the European Security Pact, in the opinion of President Cool- idge, would lay the foundation for further disarmament. Published re- ports that the presiden had given up hope for another armament conference were denied today at Summer White i House. Builders' The Result.
