Horse Races on Perfect Track. Brass Bands & Fireworks. THERE was no concealment of the satisfaction felt by members of Dryden Town Council at its regu- lar monthly meeting on Tuesday, when the official report of the vote on the Town Hall Bylaw was read by the Town Clerk, Mr Gibson. The traditional attitude of criti- cism by the average citizen toward their town administrators was for onee inconspicuous, and the Council was able to enjoy a brief sense of joy in having their efforts at town improvement rewarded by the approval of the ratepayers, ex- pressed through the ballot. Maybe it was in anticipation of finding the Councillors in an ex- pansive mood that M. S. Campbell chose this as the night to approach them with a proposition to assist in making Labour Day of this year a day more worthy of the community. Anyway whether it was due to his eloquence on the subject or the pleasant humour of the meeting, or both combined, he found no difficulty in getting an attentive hearing on his proposals, and the promise of Council that the backing of Council would be given to the Committee he repre- sented. Basing his arguments on the assumption that if Dryden intends to be the centre of this important district, it will have to exert itself to deserve the loyalty of the com- munity to that lofty claim, he proceeded to outline the plan to round out the splendid season of sport that the D.A.AA. had fur- nished this year to arrange a labor day programme for September 7th In addition to the usual program that could easily be duplicated in any farming community, they de- sired to include events like horse- 1 ~ harness, running and hitch up etitions, racing and ball competitions open to the whole district Waldht Brass Bands are to be brought in ay, and in the evening a play of fireworks will be | with the massed Bands r the music. ds hof,Wabigoon and Dryden 3: 1 The day would begin with a Monstre Parade, three-quarters of a mile long, with from 735 to 1cC autos, 400 school children all with flags, cadets in uniform, clowns, cowboys, Indians, etc., mounted and on foot, with the Bands distri- buted through the procession. The local ball teams could play in the morning, and an outside team from Keewatin, Kenora, or Sioux Lookout could come for the afternoon. Mr Crane had generously con- sented to make the track "smooth - as a billiard table round the half- mile" for horse, bicycle and foot- races, and the Sports Committee will do everything in their power to ensure the day's success. Necessarily this would cost a good deal of money, and the D.A.A.A. which had paid its way all summer and had accumulated a small surplus, was hardly in a position to carry out the plan un- aided. With what they now had promised and coming along, they would have approximately $400.00 in prizes, and he hoped Council would see its way to make some donation to the cause. In answer to a question from a Councillor Mr Campbell said they had estimated that a sum of $200 would ensure the success of their plans, and after consideration the motion of Wood-Swanson that a grant of $200 be given the Labour Day committee was unanimously carried. OR oR % The unusually small attendance at the Council meeting curtailed to some extent the amount of business that was dealt with, and an adjourned meeting next week will deal with the water and other bylaws. Two of the Councillors are out of town, and only Coun. Wilde, Swanson and Wood faced Mayor Pitt at the Council table. Following the reading of Minutes and correspondence, the Town Hall by- law was given its third reading and passed, as follows: Wilde-Swanson: That Bylaw No. 187 to raise $3500 for vepairs and aliera- tions to the Town Hall be read a third time and passed. (Carried) Tire Chief D. Anderson was instrue- ted to prepare plans for the alterations and present them to the next meeting. A requisition for $200 for the Public Library was passed, on the motion oi Coun. Wilde-Wood.
