KENORA CGreascer Quality at Low Cost a a EN ----," pi § i Protection For Your Seed. | THE system of grading and registar- ing seed of all kinds, now used throu- out Canada, which was developed by the Dominion Seed Branch, has become recognized ' throughout the world as the best that has yet bee devised. it thas put the seal of the Dominion of , Canada on Canadian seed, and created ey i + pi H + a cemand for our seed in the United States, and in European and South ! American countries. Officials of other governments have made special trips to Canada to see how our system is ° woiking oul, with a view to introduuc- jing a similar system at home. Yet,: with all its favorable comment in other 'countries, Canadians themselves, are largely still in the dark as to the ad- vantages of the Canadian Seed Act, and so cannot reap all the benefits which it was designed to impart. The law was designed to cover two phases: first, the purchase of seed; and second, its sale. 1 All kinds of grass, clover, and gra seed must not be sold unless they a lested and graded by the Dominion Seed Branch. This grade takes into consideration the general appearance of the seed, its color, freedom from weather and frost, its plumpness, the number and kinds of weed seeds pres- ent, and its ability to grow. The highest grade which can be given is known: as "Registered," and seed which receives this grade is as nearly perfect as can be grown in commercial quantity. The other = commercial grades are "Extra No. 1," "No. 1," "NO 207 and. "No. 3.7 Any seed grading lower than No. 8 is graded "Rejected" and cannot be sold in Canada as seed. All kinds of field roots and garde: seed must germinate up to Government standard, but does not yet receive a grade. If a farmer or gardiner wishes to; sell seed other than Registered or. Extra No. 1, he can c Branch, provided it complies with one it must be taken by the buyer for his own use only, being delivered to him on the farin where it was grown, ov it may be sold to a seed house, which must get it graded before selling it at ietail. Another exception is made in the case of all grass and clover seed. 'These seeds must not only be sold by anyone unless given a government grade, excep! te a seed house. Ma farmers who are not yet aware of © fact ship grass and clover seed with out having it tested and labeled with account are checked up by the Seed Branch. This is perfectly fair, for those who wish to receive the protec tion of the Seed Act should be willing to extend same protection to others. Any person who has purchased any farm or garden seeds which have been will do the rest. The Dominion Seed Act was created for your protection when you buy se Great assistance is given by ed seed. worked out on a similar system to that used in registering livestock. This must be kept carefully, because it contains the number of your crop, which is the the only way whereby your seed can ke traced back to its source. 1 After threshing your seed, send in! to the Winnipeg Office an application for ingpection of your seed. Wit this application, send your Crop Cer-. tificate, and a sample of the Seed. This sample will be tested, and the results sent to the Inspector. In your application, you have set an approximate date for inspection of vour sced. Before this date, have it all cleaned up ready for seeding, and if possible weighed out into clean strong bags. The Inspector will ar- rive withn a few days, following out his avvanged route, will inspect the seed, and if it passes his test, he will seal up these bags at once. The sealed sed can then be sold, or held as long-as desired. The rest is up to the grower. He can advertise his seed for sale in the {arm papers, sell it to his neighbours, or dispose of it to a seed house. A list of ali seed inspected is published eekly by the Seed Branch during the spection ceagon. Fees are small: 15¢. per acre for field nspection, and 3¢. per bushel for seed : inspection. 4 There is always a strong demand for registered seed, after the grower becomes established. Repuaation counts in the seed business as well as .in others. This particular district is jwell suited tc the production of regis- 21]5/26 tered barley, and a Barley Centre "would be of great financal advantage io farmers. A certa'n district about re hundred miles northwest of Brand- Man., is well suited to growing gistered oats... The farmers there have formed an Oat Centre, with the 'resulting increase in the price they re- ceive for their oats. | It is well known that this district is well suited to the production of , and with the addition of certain zers, tc the production of red ver seed. It is a little harder to duce Government graded No. 1 e and Red Clover, rather than No. 3 Seed or Mixed Seed, but the results in money are worth far more than 'the extra effort required. In a good year, the prices are higher for good seed, and in a poor year it very often happens that poor seed cannot be sold at all. Buy good seed, and grow bgger Crops. Sell Good Seed, and start a profitable business. ~ bem ory S ¢ ] pi [9] pr 5 vv) Dominion Seed Branch. 203 Trust and Loan Bldg., Winnipeg, Man. 1 Grain Exchange, Fort William, Ont. = Orih ophonic "True Inf] Sauna?
