O. Galloway, of the Ont- ario Department of Agriculture, shows that there has been considerable ex- pansion in the sheep industry through- out Ontario during the past year. For the fifirst time since 1920 an actual in- crease is reported and the larger numb- ers of animals being retained for breed- jug purposes would indicate thas further increases are in prospect. To- day the total sheep population is estim- ated at 866,500 compared with 868,500 in 1925 and 870,300 in 1924. The present total, of course, is a far cry from the 1920 population of well over a million but undoubtedly the pendulum has commenced swinging the other way. This chance has been predicted by agricultural authorities for some time, who have repeatedly pointed out that sheep raising was one of the best paying lines on the farm. Barring a brief period following the war, both lamb and wcol have held up remarkably well in prices; which fact is the main reason behind the present expension. 'While beef cattle are not any higher than they were in 1914, the average price of lamb on the Toronto market -- 1today is 50 per cent above pre-war values. = The bulk of the lambs in Ontario are marketed in October, and during this month in 1914 the average price of good stuff ran around $8.00 per hundred compared with $12.00 during the same perioa this fall. Moreover, ever since 1922 prices at this season have held remarkably steady, never fal- ling below $11.25. The entire story covers a period of only two days in the lives of an old! section hand, his three young children, hiz elder adughter, Mike, htr sweet- heart, and the inhabitants of the little degert town in which they live. With these characters, Neilan has made a picture that for sheer humor and thrills challenges any ever produced. In fact 'when the audience is not doubled up 'with laughter it is gripping its in- dividual theatre chairs with suspense. Charlie Murray, that loveable old character actor, plays "Clancy," the father of Mike, and is as Irish as his name. Never has he appeared to such advantage. With Murray is one other noted comedian, Ford Sterling, as Schmaltz. Both contribute to the general fun of the picture, playing their roles in all seriousness, thus mak- ing them doubly funny. Sally O'Neil exhibits a rare beauty and an individuality that will doubt- less carry her far. William Haines plays opposite her as Moore in his usual capal' ~mner.
