This is a particularly delicious vegetable, especially when taken I right out of the garden at the door, anyone can grow it, and for the space occupied it is one of the i most economical. Beans prefer warm weather, and open soil and plenty of sunshine and moisture. The first crop will be well under ~way now and probably a second planting started or ready to sow. : With several varieties maturing at various intervals at one's dis- posal, and two distinct types --the dwarf and the climbing-- there is a wide range. This veg- etable comes in two colors, green and the yellow, the last named be- ing known as the Wax Type and while some people prefer one to the other, both are recommended It is not advisable to plant beans in hills, except where the ground is low and inclined to be damp. Plant about an inch deep and thin to five or six inches apart. A row of twenty five to fifty feet coming on every two. weeks will keep the average family well sup- plied One can continue planting up to about the middle of july The climbing sorts go in after the weather turns thoroughly warm and they should be trained eighteen inches each way while the dwarf sorts are grown in rows from about fifteen inches up on stakes. Theserequire about . there will be. When plants are allowed to start developing seed pods, all energy goes into this part of the business and there are no more flowers. With those which produce clumps of small blooms, such as alyssum, phlox lobelia and even some of the lar- ger types such os petunias, the flowers may be sheared off. If one has the time, it is also a good plan to nip off many of the buds and a portion of the side shoots. This will result in much larger flowers os the energy which would have gone into the unwanted side shoots and buds will be turned into those buds left. If the vegetable garden suffers a check in growth results will be very disappointing as the being produced will be inclined to. be tough or stringy. Where it is possible to water, itis quite a simple fatter to keep growth go- ing regardless of the wether, but even the man without a hose or other irrigation system can work wonders with a hoe and with a quickly avoilable fertilizer such as nitrate of soda. Sprinkle the latter along the rows, using about an ounce to every six fect of row and work in well with a rake or a hoe. The garden must be (kept cultivated, particularly during dry wether as this con- serves moister by preventing evaporation of the water stored in the soil aand thus keeps the plant growing. A well-cultivated - garden will keep on growing al- most regardless of the weather. ep [HERE are ninety - six reasons why Chevrolet is the world's most popsse lar automobile.
