"Billy" Sarjeant. as he is known to everyone in the National System, began as an apprentice in 1866, the year before the Dominion of Canada - was created. For nearly a score of years he has been a locomotive inspector at the Point St. Charles shops, Montreal. In his 64 years, Billy Sarjeant has seen the development of the steam locomotive from the old clumsy wood and peat burners to the magnificent Northern giant which was created by the Canadian National Railways. "In the old days," says the veteran, "ic took us from three to six months to give one of the little fellows a thorough repair Now we can put one of the Northerns through in a week." Sarjeant supervised the erection, during his career, of more than 260 locomotives. Our Feature of the Month . NON-RAVEL RAYON BLOOMERS This is an especially low price for bloomers of such "quality. Furthermore, we want to clear out a carload of dry Jack-pine. We'll deliver it any place in town for two dollars and thirty-five cents per single cord--keep the home fires burning. I remain ! "My present financial condi- tion is due to the effects of fed- eral laws, state laws, county laws, corporation laws, by-laws, mother-in-laws and outlaws that have-been-foist- ed upon an unsuspecting public. Through these various laws, I have been held down, held up, walked on, sat on, flattened and squeezed until T do not know where I am, what I am and why I am. '""These laws compel me to pay a merchant's tax, capital stock tax, income tax, real estate tax, property tax, auto tax, gas tax, water tax, light tax, cigar tax, street tax, school tax, syn- tax and carpet tax. "In addition to these taxes, I'm requested and required to contribute to every society and organization that the inventive mind of men can organize--to the society of St. John, the women's relief, navy league, the children's home, the policemen's benefit, the dorcas gociety, the Y.M.C.A, the boy Scouts, the Jewish relief, the Near East, the gold diggers' home, the police- men's home, also every hospital and charitable institution in town, the Red Cross, the Black Cross, the White Cross, the Double Cross, the Purple Cross and the Fiery Cross. '"The government has zo gov- erned my business that [ do not know who owns it. I am «us- pected, expected, inspected, dis- respected, examined, re exeomin- ¢d, informed, rvequired. numond- all T know, is that I'm suppiicatel for mon- ey for every known need, desire. or hope of the human race, and because 1 refuse to fall tnd go out and beg, borrow and steal the money to give away, I am cussed and discussed, boycotted, talked to, talked about, lied to, Had ahant Lald cco 1 17 Jae lied about, held up, held down and robbed until I am nearly ruined, so the only reason I am clinging to life is to see what the hell is coming next!" There may be a moral to this story. The fewer laws that are passed and the less government interferes with business, the sooner will business men be in a position to write cheques when they are needed.
