ERAL COUNCIL TALS WITH MANY QUE TIONS VITAL TO NORTH To Ask Separate Government Controlling Tourist Trade (The Soo Star) No less than 11 resolutions, every one of which had some vital relationship to Northern and Northwestern Ontario's needs were presented at yester- day atfernoon's session of the General Couneil of Northern and Northwestern Ontario in St. Tiwke's Hall. They covered many subjects ranging from that dealing with iron ore to one ask- ing the government to open part of a township near Hornepayne to settlers to another asking a sanitorium for the north west- ern section of the province. All 11 resolutions were carried. "One or two others were suggest- ed to the council but it was de- cided that they were of a strict- ly local nature and did not af- feet the north as a whole and they were dropped from, the agenda. The first topic dealt with in the afternoon was the iron ore resolution, and the amendment to that resolution. The amend- ment asking the provincial and federal governments to share in providing a bounty was defeated 'the original resolution carrying. It asked the provincial govern- ment to place a bounty of two and a half cents per unit: on! iron ore mined in the province and to give tariff aid to the iron and steel industry. The tourist traffic was the subject of two resolutions. One asked the provincial and federal governments and the railroads and steamboat companies to ¢on- sider the possibility of Northern Ontario as a summer and winter rope | Painting and Paperhanging Price Reasonable 1 . A resolution presented by the only lady delegate to the con- vention, Mrs. J. Port Arthur, for a sanitarium for tubercular patients in the lakehead area was carried unani- mously. Four roads were named in a resolution suggesting the build of provincial highways to help relieve the unemployment prn- blemm. Three of these were in the Kenora district while the fourth was the Sudbury, Tim- mins road. road building was approved in principle by the conference. An- cther project which received complete endorsation was that asking the provincial govern- nent to continue to seek the re- opening of tlie pulp mills of the north country. The colonization of the desert: ed famalands in Northern Ont- ario and government aid in this matter was approved in another resolution.
