THE DRYDEN OBSERVER HEE pope _ | November 13th, 1031; 5) € Vl of Drugs Many of our correspondents ] aeir LRECEEN with regard to treatment and, partienlarly, ad-, concerning the value of, particular drug as a remedy certain disease. . for advice vireo SOME, illness occurs, the pa-| treatment for two: get desires reasons; one is in order to relief from the symtoms which trouble him, and the other is for the cure of his disease. It is comparatively easy to relieve symptoms. Pain is the most distressing symptom and there are drugs which will re- lieve pain. There is no reason why symptoms should not be re- lieved, but this has nothing to do with the real treatment which alms to cure, or at least to improve the condition of the patient. Before a disease can be pro- verly treated, a diagnosis must be made. In this connection, headache offers a simple exam- ple. There are many causes of headache; it may be due to eye- gtrain, and then the: treatment | consists in wearing properly- fitted glasses; it may, however, be due to kidney disease, and in: such a case, glasses will not, of, course, help. A diagnosis is not always easy to make. "A doctor need all the gkill he has aequired through years of training and experience to enable him to search out the] cause of a condition. In some cases, he will frankly admit that even with his skill, he is baffled. It is just because it is so diffi- cult that doctors have to devote many vears of their lives to pre- pare themselves, and it is this preparation that the layman lacks. This does not mean that there is anything mysterious about medicine, but simply that it takes years of hard work to acquire medical knowledge and! the skill to put it into practice. Another point which is fire- quently overlooked is that no two persons are exactly alike, whence it follows that no two cases of disease are just the same and no individuals react in Ganabian Hedical Association GRANT FLEMING, M.D. a the same way to drugs and oth- Edited by oa ASSOCIATE SECRETARY er treatment. In other words, cach case must be treated in- dividually, and the treatment ve- commended is based, first of all, on the diagnosis, and is i or altered derending contin upon the res tien ment used. There are many who think that they ave quite capable of lookine after minor illnesses. We would point out to them that the proper early treatment of what appears to be nothing seri- ons is the best way, and offen the only way, to prevent the de- velopment of a serious, if not fatal condition. Drugs have their place, but thep should be used only when prescribed by someone who un- derstands the drugs and the con- dition for which they are to be used. . Questions concerning Health, addressed to the Canadian Medical = Associa tion, 184 College St. Toronto, will be answered personaly by letter. Financial News Many years ago two Scotch- men might have been seen on the corner of a street in Montreal flipping a quarter which was all the money they had in the worid hetween them, to decide whether the would spend it on a bath or breakfast. Cleanliness won out, go they started for the bath. Arriving there, they found that only one could have a bath for a quarter so they tossed for the hath. The loser stayed outside and minded his friend's clothes. Suddenly a bright thought struck him; he gathered up hi: friend's clothes and took them to a pawn shop and pawned them for $2.00. With the $2.0) in his pocket, he walked dow the street and was attracted by a sign in a window: "This cioek for $40.00--$1.00 down and $1.02 a month." He went in anc bought the clock. Taking it with him, he walked around the cor- ner to a well known repository and pawned it for $20.00. He travelled back to pawn shop No. For Your Winter Needs Come in and look over cur Stock Goods for Men and Boys. About thig time the merchant, who had sold him the clock, went out for a walk and saw his clock in the pawn shop window. He had the two men arrested and hailed before a judge. In those days justice was speedy and they were tried immediately. The Scetchman's defence was that he owned the clock, had bought it on the terms offered by the storekeeper, had paid his dollar down, and was going to pay his dollar a month until the clock was paid for. Meantime they had handed it to their "Unele"" for safe-keeping. Their argument was plainly stated, and the Judge acquitted them. They went to a lawyer and sued the storekeeper for $1,000.- 00 for defamation of character. They won the case, and on this series of transactions was based two of the largest fortunes pos- sessed today by two of the most prominent Scotehmen in the City of Montreal.
