It is quite true that these diseases do occur chiefly among children, for the reason that children have no immunity or power of resistance against the invading disease germs. Disease among children % just as serious as when disease affects adults. Every communicable disease is serious. Some take a heavier toll than others, some are more damaging in their after effects, but all are serious. The com- municable diseases should be prevented when possible, avoid- ed always, and treated seriously if they do occur. We look forward to the time when we will be able definitely to prevent all the communicable diseases, which are now causing so much suffering and disability a 24 lassifi=d WANTED -- WORK BY THE day, apply Mrs. P. We invite you to fellowship | ith us. series of sermons on 'The Sins; OF THE Edited'by asd ASSOCIATE SECRETARY and which are responsible for a very large number of deaths. The {first disease against which | we were given a means of defin- | ite protection was smallpox. I the year 1796, Jenner, an Eng lish physician, published his! findings which demonstrated that vaccination would prevent | smallpox. Smallpox is banished where vaccination is used. Smallpox is no longer one of the usual diseases of children, as it was before vaccination was discover- ed. In the pre-vaccination per- iod, about one out of every ten | deaths was caused by this one disease, and it was unusual to see a person who was not scarr- ed by smallpox. Within the past few years, we have been given the means of banishing another of the so-call- ed 'usual diseases of children-- diphtheria. Diphtheria is a dis-! ease which, for generations, has struck terror into the hearts of € parents. That diphtheria still continues to take a toll of over nine hun- dred lives each year, in this country, is due to our failure to make use of the means which are at our disposal for its pre- vention. We 'have, in diphtheria immunization, a simple, safe and sure method of preventing diph- theria. : Unfortunately, the list of dis-' eases which we can prevent so definitely is limited. We can, | however, in all cases, use the' general methods which are of, value. No child should ever be! exposed to contact with a child | or an adult who is suffering from a communicable disease. Isolation and quarantine are carried out to safeguard others, not merely to protect those who are quarantined. The placard on the door is placed there as a warning to others, not for -the protection of the inmates of the placarded house. Proper treatment of the case will lessen the chance of serious results. Neglect of the case, fail- ure to understand that disease is always serious, lead to unnecess- ary pain and damage, if not to fatal results. Questions concerning Heath, addressed to the Medical Association, 184 College Street, Toronto, will be answered personally by letter. Marriage brings a lot of change into a man's life, says a novelist. And it takes a lot out too. --=| NOTICE OF ADJOUR- NED TAX SALE of the Quibell Consolidated School Section in the Townships of Wabigoon and Redvers District of Kenora. ~ PUBLIC NOTICE, in pur- snance of the Assessment Act and an Act respecting Public Schools, is hereby given that all lands unsold at Sheriff's Sale of lands, liable for Tax Sale for arrears of School Taxes, held Friday, January 8th, 1932, anid Friday, January 29th, 1932, will be sold at an Adjourned Sale to be held on Monday, March 7th, 1932, at the hour of Eleven 0'Clock in the forenoon, at the Sheriff's Office, Court House, in Kenora.
