ho ng AGE FOUR ~~ - NOVEMBER 17th, 1033. - oh | | | THE DRYDEN OBSERVER is Be a ale AJ B.C. Father of European Forests By F. DAPHNE LOuUWICK. of = te lt me eee JIDDEN away among dunes of North Kamloops, behind a picket fence and tall shrubs, is a little house wherein lives a versatile: man. He writes excellent verse, prose and, doubtless, sonnets, collects an- tiques of all kinds, carves beautifully on wood, does his own housework and cooking, and, above all, has de- veloped what might have merely been a useless hobby into a business of growing importance to British Colum- bia. It is the collecting and export- ing of coniferous seeds. He is Capt: W. A. Edye de Hurst. As a boy he roamed the Devonshire moors, forever collecting seeds of flowers and trees. The hobby has developed into a business in B. £1 Orders for Canadian spruce, Douglas fir and seed of other trees have come from Europe and Australasia, as well as from the prairie provinces. * The Great War played havoc with the forests of Europe. Timber was sacrificed to the imperative demands of the moment, without consideration of the future. Reforestation was inevitable, especially in the varieties from which pulpwood is made. At this date every province with mater- jal forest resources has buildings and equipment for the extraction and cleaning of the various seeds, and the department of forestry acts as purchasing agent for the United Kingdom and Overseas Dominions. The business of collecting and eX- porting seed, however, was first un- dertaken in Canada by Captain de Hurst. He commenced near Dryden, Ont., just west of the Great Lakes. Besides the seeds of trees in that area, cones of the Sitka spruce from Queen Charlotte Islands were eX- ported 'in large quantities. In a few years, for Australasia necessitated the trans- fer of operations to B. C, and the! the sand | increasing demands for seed | station was erected in 1926-27. Thers was no model for this plant. It was designed by Captain de Hurst. It cost about $3000. The machinery electrically operated. The building has the outward ap- pearance of a horse barn. The usual debris of a barnyard is replaced by a thick layer of cones of evergrecn rees. There is a pile of dilapidated cones nearly as high as the huilding .tself. The place looks as though ai the squirrels in the neighborhood had had an enormous party. The furnace room is also used for storing bags and other gear. At the top of a ladder is the drying-roora, where 500 wire-bottom trays have been constructed in tiers. When the cones are first brought in they are placed on these trays to dry. When they are sufficiently open they are emptied into a shoot, which conveys them to the threshing druin, measuring twelve feet long with four sides four and one-half feet. Two on opposite sides have metal screens, through which the seeds fall to the seed floor, while the empty cones are automatically discharged and remov- ed from the building by a conveyor. The seed is rough-winnowed to ve- move dust and anything likely to damage the dewinger, the beaters of which travel at 600 revolutions a minute. The output from this is seed and dust, which, after being rewinnowed, leaves the seed ready to pack for shipment. All seed not required for immediate release is stored in metal containers. The cone season last from about August to December. During that time, if conditions are favourable, it is possible to handle 140 bushels of cones in twenty-four hours. The Kamloops plant has only been in operation a few years, but Captain de Hurst finds an increasing de- terioration in the cones within that short period. Parasites cut off nourishment to the seed before it is they dry. is all withered. In some seasons numbers of moths come out of the cones as The moths are unable to survive the heat of the drying-room, so that their death must aid in re- ducing pests in the: area where the cones were collected. als Questioned as to the possibility cf checking insect damage to the forests. Captain de Hurst expressed the opin- ion that, although dusting from the air might prove effective, the remedy could only be very local. He con- sidered that while parasites were probably always doing some damage, they were getting beyond eontrol be- cause of forest fires destroying so many nests of insect-eating birds. Ie mentioned having seen a larch about fifteen feet high which he had grown for ornament, infested. from top to bottom with larch ecutworms. He was on the point of fetching a spray when he saw some ten or twelve Canadian sgoldfinch alight on the tree. Keeping at a distance, he watched them for nearly half an hour, and when they had left not a single worm was visible. ® "Until recently, he told me, the Con- tinent of Furope has been the source of much that has been imported into Canada in the way of tree. seeds. Fiamburg being the point of con- centration. "But," he added, "with suitable climate and an enthusiasm to foster inter-Empire trade, we can visualize a time not very distant when British Columbia will have demonstrated her ability to compete with allcomers in every branch of the seed industry, as she can now in Ler natural beauties. Yet if, as wiih our forest resources in the past, we over-industralize and give no thought to the fu,ure generations, someone will have to pay the price, even as we, through these forests, are paying the price today." Captain de Hurst, however, by col- lecting healthy seed and sending it far and wide is doing his bit to re- plenish the forests of Canada and other countries of the world and fortify the safety of generations vet to come. 3 de Hurst forest seed separating fully ripe, leaving it either light ov The month of October marks the Es. 0 0 0h. 40 dn 40 00 4 40 40 £0 40 40 40 86 40.40 40 40 40 40 Ab 46 40 S040 40 AMAL 4h 80 end of harvest time in the northern 4 : hemisphere and the beginning of 4 YOUR EHOME IS YOUR CASTLE ) harvest in countries south of the { Admit only clean, constructive news by reading 4 equator. p THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR ; : - § : A Daily Newspaper for the Hone } i 4 A Few Sips--A Few Cents It gives all. the constructive world news but does not exploit crime and scandal. 4 > 2 Sian Has i ing { f {l the family on Women's Activities, Home- a et Bhoka, Alo pases for the Chien nd Yous Coughs, Colds Gone b> Folks.
