FORMER MAYOR OF CALGARY IS DEAD, AGED 65 Geo. H. Webster, Noted Figure of West, Had Bean Liberal Leader CALGARY, Nov. 10.--Four times mayor of Calgary and Alberta Liberal George Harry Webster, following rarty stalwart, died Thursday, lengthy iliness. leader for the Liberal party in Al- here a He was former House berta legislature. Born in Leicester, England, 65 years ago, Webster carne to Canada with his parents in 1873, settling in Orangeville, Ont. When the family came to Winnipeg, in 1880, the Foot- hills called the youth. who later be- came Calgary mayor in 1923, 24, '25, 96. He became a personal friend of the Prince of Wales when the royal family member visited Alberta. Constructed Railways. Railway contracting and the cattle business interested Mr. Webster. He became manager of Senator Patrick Burns' packing company in 1900. He built sections of the Grand Trunk Pacific, railway in the. Dryden, Ont, and Calgary area. He constructed the Edmonton and Dunvegan railway in the Peace River country. In 1926 he was elected to the Al- berta legislature as Liberal member for Calgary and was re-elected in 1930. In 1932 he quit his post as tiouse leader because of a serious abdominal ailment which caused his death Thursday morning: Ww. R. Howson, K.C., succeeded him as Lib- eral chieftain. The title of "Cowboy Mayor" was won by Mr. Webster because of his support of the Calgary stampede. His friendship with the Prince called for visits to the royal ranch near High River, and a Visit to Buckingham Palace during a trip to England. He is survived by his wife, for- merly May Calder, of Winnipeg; two daughters, Mrs. Orren Olson, Cal- gary, and Mrs. Robert Kellaway, Calgary, and a son Daniel, of New York city. Mrs. Norman Andrew and Mrs. A. Logan, both of Winnipeg, are sisters. A third sister, Mrs. F. Davies, lives in Neepawa, Man. --Winnipeg Tribune.
