Age 83; resident of Evanston IL, former longtime Winnetka resident (1953-97); native of Chicago, attended Lane Technical H.S., track scholarship to Wabash College in Crawfordsville IN; worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.; WWII enlisted in U.S. Navy, worked on development/production of remote controlled drones; 1943 employed by General American Corp, developed shells to penetrate German tanks; after war, took courses at Purdue U.-Calumet campus; 1946-47 enrolled in master's program in economics at U. of Chicago; 1948 joined Inland Steel personnel office, 1952 vice president/head of department of industrial relations, 1953 board of directors of Chicago Urban League; active in Congregational Church in Winnetka, literary societies, Democratic Party, member of Winnetka Plan Commission; 1957 faculty member at Institute for American Studies at Salsburg, Austria and president of Industrial Relations Association of Chicago; 1961 named chair of Commission on Unemployment by Governor Otto Kerner; chair of Chicago Mayor's Committee on Long Range Ecomonic and Manpower Planning, adviser to Mayor's Office of Employment & Training; 1966 head of U.S. Employment Service, architect of War on Poverty; 1968-85 professor of organizational behavior in Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern U., professor emeritus lecturer in industrial engineering and management studies at McCormick School of Engineering & Applied Science; married 59 years; preceded in death by a son, Thomas - Date of Publication
