Harry Harold Coon passed away peacefully at his home in Glenview, IL at age 92. A memorial service was held on June 23, 2015 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL. Harry Coon was the son of Louise Dowdell Walker and Harry H Walker. After his natural father died due to injuries suffered in World War I, his mother married Owen L. Coon in May, 1930. Harry became the adopted son of Owen Coon, and his name was changed to Harry Harold Coon. Harry graduated from the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, the World War II intervened. He served in the US Navy Band in Yorktown, VA during World War II. Harry Coon married Alma Seippel of Evanston IL in March 1944. They had a wonderful marriage of 60 years. Harry worked with his father Owen Coon at General Finance Corporation (1945-48), and then at CBS from the late 1940s through the mid 1950s. This segued into the burgeoning commercial music business, working out of his home studio in Glenview. He and Alma owned and operated a radio station in St. Louis, MO, during the late 1960s, which he sold. Returning to his home in Glenview, Harry continued his own music business during the 1970s and 1980s. He was President of the Owen L. Coon Foundation, which his father had established in 1946, from 1961 until 1991. During his tenure, the Foundation contributed substantially to both Northwestern University and to Evanston Hospital (now NorthShore University HealthSystem). Harry and Alma both loved Williamsburg. During the 1970s, they purchased a home ((Seven Springs() in the Williamsburg area that had originally been built in 1732. They restored the home to its colonial tradition, but with modern conveniences. Several years ago, Harry donated the home to the Williamsburg Foundation. Harry and Alma also donated their substantial collections of silver, pottery and porcelain to Williamsburg, and their extensive collection of Audubon prints to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
