Age 87; resident of Wilmette IL since 1968; youngest of seven, born in Pennsylvania to Katherine (housewife) and William Thomas Sr. (minister, carpenter, bricklayer, Buffalo Soldier with 9th Calvary in Spanish American War); graduated from high school at 17 in 1943; worked in Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia as rigger; joined U.S. Marine Corps, sent to segregated all black Marine boot camp at Montford Point, Jacksonville NC, served in Pacific theater and Guam; returned to Pennsylvania to work in steel mills; attended Springfield College in Massachusetts on G.I. Bill, earned BS degree, Magna Cum Laude; graduated from Boston U.'s medical school, elected to Alpha Omega Honor Society, four-year pathology residency at Cincinnati General Hospital, internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital; practiced medicine in Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, and Michael Reese and Mount Sinai hospitals in Chicago area; active parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church; received Congressional Gold Medal in June 2012 from U.S. Marines for efforts leading to integration of Marine Corps; preceded in death by a son, William C. Thomas III in 2002 and siblings, Ella, Charlotte, Cora, Lewis, Lawrence and Viola
