1950 drafted into the U.S. Army
1952 commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant
1953 was awarded Bronze star when he and his sergeant rescued and saved the lives of three wounded infantry men who were trapped in the rubble when their bunker was destroyed.
October 1953 promoted to 1st Lieutenant and became battery commander of B Battery before being honorably discharged

1958-1988 director of Glenview Public Library
1973-1974 President of the Illinois Library Association
Helped establish the Glenview Area Historical Society, and served as its Secretary and Vice President
Vice President of the Glenview Volunteer Bureau
Was a member of the Glenview Rotary Club and served as Secretary, Vice President and, ultimately, President
