Nearly all those asked were absent quantities however, and it fellto the lot of Mr. Geo T. Hamilton to start the ball rolling. Mr. Hamilton confined his re- marks principally to the financial statement, showing, therefrom, that the Council for the past year had kept the expenditure well be- low the estimates. The most diffi- cult problem, he said, was the col- lection of taxes, $30000 of which was still outstanding. While the war had tought municipalities to economize, , still there were many citizens who would not pay their taxes and were therefore a hind- rance to the town. Other speakers were Messrs L. | Gagnon, FE, J. Morris, J. A. Donnell} E. C. Wright and H. A. He next tackled Mayor MacAulay who was entertained for some time by a magnificent flow of superiour English. Deciding that New Liskeard pre- sented opportunities for his extra- ordinary capabilities he journeyed thither and apparently was so shocked at the appearance of the town that he endeavoured to drown his disappointment in the cup that cheers, and he was successful in acquiring a jag that jailed him, The Presbyterian minister, apparently impressed with the fact the sinner carried the Bible on his person, paid his fine $9 50 and sent him on_ his way rejoicing, Nowit transpired that our worthy arm of the law, Jack Fleming by name, smelt game in the air, and scenting the trail he soon landed the modern Bunyan in the coop, not before he had lifted a ten spot from Rey.
