Notes of The North The local baseball club had a hectic week when they were ov- erwhelmed in Timmins on Mon- day, 19th July by a score of 23-6, or some such number. The least said about this game the better. On the following Wednesday, however, they redeemed them- selves splendidly by defeating the league leading South Porcupine team by 13 runs to 7 on_ their own grounds. -- Iroquois Falls Broke Hustler. The Abitibi ferry was the scene of a fatal accident on Sunday when Heetor Desjardins of Nor- embega, section man on the C.N, R. lost his life By drowning after the car which he drove on his way back from Cochrane tipped off the ferry into the Abitibi river It appears that when the car was driven onto the ferry it was found that the fery was- out of balance and Desjardins was ask- ed to run a few feet ahead. Ap- parently the brakes did not func- tion right and the car shot over the edge of the ferry into the water, caryring Desjardins to his qvatery graye----Cochrane Post. Immediately following the pub- lication by The Advance of a let- ter complaining of the lax en- forcement of the traffic and speed laws, considerable improve- ment has been evidenced. The motor cycle, which had appar- ently been reposing in the garage was brought out and a new officer trained to operate it. This new traffic officer is Constable Moore, who picked up the secret of run- ning the motor cycle in short or- der and now seems to be more than usually adept at the work.-- Porcupine Advance. One thing that, ac-}burian office one day last week a cording to newspaper reviews, impresses the public in watching the exhibitions given by this re-} markable group of lions the | untamed fierceness of the ' ani- mals. While yielding to the per- sistent efforts of their trainer,} Steve Batty, to train them the! tricks that primarily make their performances so interesting, there is abundant evidence that their native wildness has not been sub- dued and that they are still kings of the forest despite their enforc- ed captivity. Cleverly as they have been trained, it would be quite unsafe to exhibit these lions in an open ring, and consequently they are presented in a _ great Safety First arena, in,which they can be seen to advantage with absolutely no danger to the spec- tators. The Sparks Fighting Lions are in worthy company, for half a score of other remark- able trained wild beasts are in- cluded in the new displays, chief of which are a group Of nine roy- al Bengal tigers that have been trained to the limit of animal in- telligence. Then there is a mix- ed group of Polar bears, great Dane dogs and lilliaputian ponies --all recent importations from the world's foremost wild animal training quarters at Stellinghen, Germany. Of course there are many other animal acts of a dom- estic nature intermingled with the wild animals.. A group of South American llamas have been trained to bend obedience to the will of the trainer and will be an- other rare feature of this famous circus in conjunction with the Sparks seals and sea-lions, the Bibb County educated pigs, anda host of other animal acts that have helped to make the name Sparks a household word. All will be seen.in the stupendous street parade, the longest in the world, at 11 a.m. on Circus Day. Tents located west of Church College.
