o« drives that are meant for ra) SS Silver Centre Wins Group Championship Silver Centre ball tossers are undisputed champions of the Southern Group of the Temiska- ming Baseball League by virtue of their easy win over Cobalt on Monday night at Cobalt, the score being 14-2. Up to that game New Liskeard had a chance to tie up the group standing, but last year's champs. were taking no chances and sew- ed up the title safely. Newkirk did the hurling for the winners, with Harry, Cowden be- hind the plate, owing to the ab- sence of Brock Cross. "Newk" Jet Cobalt down with very few hits, Al. Nadeau getting the on- ly extra-base blow. The winners gathered plenty from the offer- ings of Pete Giovanella, includ- ing home runs by Harry Cowden and Scott, both mammoth drives over the left field fence which ac- counted for five runs. Silver Centre has a smart ball team, strong hitters and fair fielders in almost every position, and should give battle to all and sundry in defence of the Trophy, which they captured last year. In the box they have Earl New- kirk, pitching better ball than ever, Mullin, who has looked very good at times this season, Russ. Lemon and Frank Gregg, Hailey- bury boys, both with a nice as- sortment of hooks and smoke, and Harry Cowden, who cavorts at almost any position, can also toss in some foolers. Behind the plate they have Brock Cross, a smart receiver, with plenty of pep_and a great wing. Seth.and Harry Cowden can also handle shoots back-of the plate creditab- ly. Archie Howes looks after the initial sack in good style and Stan. Lemon strengthens the sec- ond base position over last year. Harry Cowden, the mainspring of the team, is the regular short- stop and gobbles up hoists and hits, 'with nonchalance. Scott, the new third baseman, is a sweet fielder, and wields a wicked bludgeon. Scott adds needed strength to the hot corner. There are quite a number of candidates for outfield berths, a- mong them being Seth Cowden, Eddie St. Cyr, Charlie Graham, Wilf. Lanthier, Russ. Lemon and Frank Gregg, so that this de- partment will be well looked after in the play-offs. McCann, Hulse, Nagle, and Garrison are others ~ who can be called on for service if needed. There is no dearth of Material in Silver Centre this season.. They have really two lone goes and they are consider- All Signs Point to a Bountiful Harvest The district of Temiskaming will reap a bountiful harvest this year from present indications. In a somewhat hurried trip through the farming sections last week- end, one gathered the impression that crops of all kinds were com- ing along nicely and that, given good haying and harvest weath- er, there will be nothing to com- plain of in regard to the season from the farmers' standpoint. While the hay crops appear to be fairly short, they are heavy in almost every section. There was at that time very little haying done, all the fields-being untouch- ed with the exception of a few acres here and there. Where the hay has been cut and is still in the fields it presents the appearance of being a good average crop and of good quality. - The grain crops are good in all the territory be- tween, New Liskeard and Swas- tika. They are late in places but look healthy and thriving. One crop that presents the ap- pearance of being a bumper one is the potato. Great fields of these are to be seen wherever ably farther advanced than is usual at this time of year. Wher- ever garden plots are to be seen there is also every evidence of a splendid harvest. About the only difference be- tween Temiskaming and the sou- thern part of the-province now is the absence of fruit trees here. If the time ever comes when, with new systems as the result of study and research it will be pos- sible to raise fruit in Temiskam- ing and make it pay, there will be absolutely nothing to be said against the "frozen north" as a farming country. --_--< ao Annual Oddfellows' Picnic ~ On Wednesday, August 10th The annual Oddfellows' picnic will be held this year on Wednes- day, August 10th, at New Lis- keard beach. It is expected that, as in previous years all the lodges which comprise District No. 58 will be represented at the annual outing. There are five Oddefl- ows' lodges, Cobalt, Haileybury, New Liskeard, Englehart and Kirkland Lake, and four Rebekah Lodges, the latter being repre- sented in each of the towns with the exception of Kirkland. the well known breaks in luck, they should repeat last season's Silver Centre Ball Club Now that Silver Centre has captured the Southern Group title in the Temiskaming Baseball League, the matter of play-offs with the winners in the Central and Northern Groups will have to be arranged. Last spring at the annual meet- ing of the League held at Kirk- land Lake, it was decided that, owing to Iroquois Falls being granted a bye, to play the winner of the Northern Group, the win- ners of the Central and Southern would play off. Iroquois Falls' representative at the meeting stated that his town was operat- ing a town league and would not ern group games of the T. B. L., but when the schedule was drawn up the Falls team was in and they have taken part in the regular tilts throughout the season, bat- tling it out with the McIntyre team for the group championship. So now Silver Centre comes to bat with the statement that, they being last year's League champions and holders of the McInnis Trophy, the Northern and Central-groups should play off for the right to meet them, which sounds reasonable. This information came in .a telephone conyersation with the Secretary of the Silver Centre club yesterday afternoon, to be followed by a letter to the Ist vice-president of the League to- day. The matter will be taken up by the League executive very shortly, as the play-offs should all be completed before the good weather wanes. Lake Shore Mines, at Kirkland Lake are Central group winners, and the McIntyre team, of Schu- macher are ahead in the North- ern end of the T. B.
