SPLENDID CONCERT IS GIVEN BY LOCAL BAND LAST SUNDAY EVENING A splendid open air concert was given by the Haileybury Citizens Band on Sunday evening last before a large audience which gathered on Broadway Street following the services in the churches. There were some 20 players present, and, with the ad- dition of some new music, the concert was one that was thor- oughly enjoyed by all. The band, under the instruction of Mr. G. Parkinson, is steadily progressing and new players are being added regularly. Although it is only a few months since the organization of the band, it is al- ready becoming a first class mu- sical body. Concerts are being given in both Cobalt and Hailey- bury at regular intervals and the Wrongful Dismissal is Alleged in Court Case A shortage of $2 in the day's takings at the Haileybury store of Assaf & Co., on June 3rd, was the starting point of an action heard in Division cotirt here on Friday, when Miss Henrietta Boyle, of Cobalt, sued the firm for $115, damages claimed for al- leged wronful dismissal. Eddie Assaf, nephew of the proprietor, admitted subsequent- ly that he had taken the money, and Albert Assaf, his uncle, has signed a statement, with R. D. Cumming, local barrister, as wit- ness, clearing the plaintiff and Miss Edmonds, a fellow clerk in the store. Miss Boyle and Eddie Assaf were "fired", it was stated in the evidence, although the uncle de- clared his nephew was living with him in Cobalt and "was around the Cobalt store once in a while." Miss Edmonds resigned. Miss Boyle claimed a month's wages, car fare, and the price of seven meals weekly for a month, this, she said, being her contract with the firm. She alleged that the reasons given for her dismissal were that her employer objected to her having brought Mr. Cum- ming into the store to question Eddie and because she, with Miss Edmonds, had. gone out of the store "in my time" to consult the lawyer, leaving Eddie in charge, they knowing him "to be a thief." Defendant did not deny this. He insisted Mr. Cumming had witnessed his signature to the statement when he had signed it, but this was denied by both girls and the lawyer, and the absence of the former from the'store they explained by their visit to Mr. Cumming to obtain his signature as witness. According to the evidence, Ed- die Assaf had a smash-up with his uncle's car prior to the tak- ing of the money, and he had a repair bill to meet. Albert Assaf produced a charge slip to show Miss Boyle had sold her sister two pairs of boys' overalls at what he alleged was the cost, and not the selling price, but plaintiff insisted there had been a _ sale tag on the articles; and Assaf ad- mitted he did not advance this evidence as one reason for dis- missing his former manageress. Albert Assaf told Judge Hay- ward the reason he had signed the statement was that "I was sore because they had given me all this worry and trouble," but he did not answer when His Hon- or asked him if he thought his reply sounded "reasonable." The case will be argued next week and decision rendered later. er Youngest First Class Student At Toronto Normal School Haileybury friends of Miss Le- ona Charlebois received word last week-end that she had been suc- cessful in obtaining her First Class Certificate from the Toron- to Normal School. We _ under- stand also that she-was the youngest first class student at Toronto. Miss Charlebois is the daughter of Mrs. Charlebois, Principal of the Haileybury Separate School. Congratulations are extended. cece --------) RIFLE ASSOCIATION IN CONNECTION WITH 97TH IS BEING FORMED HERE A Rifle Association in connec- tion with the local company of the 97th Algonquin Rifles is being formed here, under the direction of Captain Millen, and the first steps were taken on Tuesday ey- ening, when some fourteen men signed the roll. These consisted largely of the volunteers who spent the training period in camp at Owen Sound early in the month. The boys had been noti- fied that a parade would be held that evening, but not many of them were out on account of the muddy condition of the ground. It is necessary that at least thirty men join the association at the start, in order that an in- structor may be sent from head- quarters. It is proposed to have the old indoor range in the arena building fixed up for practice and an outdoor range-will be provid- ed. Those wishing to enroll in the association can give their names to Mayor Hamilton at any time and as soon as the required number are signed up further steps will be taken to get the project under way.
