PUBLISHERS THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1928 Local People Not Selfish The ways of some newspapers are beyond understanding. Last week we find The Porcupine Ad- vance taking The Haileyburian to task over a short news item which stated that a North Bay taxi man had driven from that city to Haileybury in three hours. The only comment that was made was that the Ferguson Highway must be in pretty fair shape for that distance. The Advance says that we have a wrong idea of fhe purpose and usefulness of the highway and that the southern area is turning against the north, because the road from Haileybury to North Bay is good. It claims that we ought to "have enough imagina- tion to realize how \e would feel if that part of the road were impassable." : This hardly seems a fair com- ment. It has always been recog- Porcupine district have. They are not-selfish, as The Advance :would appear to believe, but can jsee the other fellow's point as iwell as their own and they can be relied upon to do their part in the development of the whole North. Industries Needed Now With her newly paved streets, Haileybury will soon be the envy of other towns in the North, but there is one feature that is sadly out of keeping with an up-to- date town. That is the great lack of industries that would provide work for men and thus add to the population and general pros- perity of the town. That this was to be overcome to some extent looked probable some months ago. The Board of Trade started the year with sev- eral projects that it was hoped would bear fruit, but nothing tangible has so far resulted. However, there are still hopes that the year will not close with- out something being accomplish- ed along these lines. Haileybury can boast of her beautiful site, of her splendid ed- ucational facilities, of her first clas living conditions in general, and now of her newly-paved streets, but she needs industries in order that she may continue to grow. How to acocmplish the end desired is not so easy to point nized that all the newspapers of the North Country have worked |} out. One gathers by attending public meetings that the consen- to the best of their ability for the| Sus of opinion is that. unless the general good, have supported every project that tended toward the proper development of the country and have worked to- gether at all times when publici- ty was required in any undertak- ing, either of governments, local organizations or individuals. In regard to the Ferguson Highway, the whole question was thoroughly aired at the recent meeting of the Northern Ontario Associated Boards of Trade here. The Northern delegates, who had come down with their 'grievances in regard to certain sections of the road, had ample opportunity to present their case to the Min- ister of Lands and Forests, and Mr. Finlayson spent considerable time in going over the whole eet cer with then "Fhe *tpstot was that the majority were en- tirely satisfied that the Northern | dertake. town's own people are willing to invest their money at home, there is little use in trying to interest outsiders. That viewpoint has been advanced on more than one occasion this year when the in- dustrial situation was being dis- cusssed. If that is the thing that is re- quired, it should easily be pos- sible to improve the situation. Haileybury people have proved on more than one occasion that they can carry out what they un- One has only to look back over the five-year period since the big fire to secure ample proof of this. The town was re- built in a couple of years after it, had been practically wiped out, all done by peoples the 'majority of whom had suffered losses which would have discouraged the average person to such an ex- Development Branch was doing all in its power to make both the | northern and southern sections} of the highway a help to the| people of the whole district. The Advance may rest assured] that the people of this section) are not turning against the peo- ple in the more northerly dist-| ricts, but will continue in the future, as in the past, to join with them in any project that is for the general good. The fact that the road to the south of us is in good condition does not satisfy the people of Cobalt, Haileybury and New Liskeard. They want to drive north as well as south and have exactly the same inter- ests in promoting the welfare of the settlers along the highway and its branches from North Bay to Cochrane and as much further as possible, that the people of the tent that he would have failed to try again in the same place. Later, when the need for a hotel in town became urgent, the people came to the rescue and built one that gave Haileybury a new stafiding in the North. More recently still, this summer, when a call was made for subscriptions for the new hospital, the people again answered and that project is now assured. Could not the industrial situa- tion be improved in somewhat the same manner? Does it not look as though all that is requir- ed is 2 beginning? We have a fine town in every way but one and it appears that we could make it a beter one if the people themselves only make up _ their minds to solve the problem in much the same Way as our other problems have been solved. The sunshade sank quickly out of sight, but this was a simple mat- ter forthe swimmers, divers, etc. who were at the time disporting themselves in the water between the Government Wharf and the Market. One of them promptly dived to the bottom and retrieved the article. He was sincerely thanked by thé lady and the inci- dent closed.
