Fashion Fancies A Chiffon Dance Frock Easily Made at Home. Chiffon is, of course, the ideal material for the fairly informal summer dance frock. If you are clever with your needle you can easily make one up at home at a surprisingly low cost. Here, for instance, is a charm- ing model, very simply made. Its important feature is its wide, full bertha collar, which develops, in back, into two long butterfly wings that float gracefully when one is dancing. Its sleeveless crepe jacket is of brilliant red, matching exactly the band at the hem of the white crepe frock. ee Ei Here Are Some Interesting Accessories for You Often it has been said that the accessories make the costume. Here is a panel of these neces- sary adjuncts which, if worn with the right things, will assuredly add distinction. At the top we find a pouch bag of crepe de chine with a catch of fine marcasite. Next to it we have a slipper of flowered cretonne. Worn witha frock to match the main color, both of these will do much to finish the costume. Next/is the scarf. It is a silk square printed in a modern de- sign and tied in a new way. Just below it and to the left is a char- ming necklace with earrings to match. Of crystal cut in a geo- metrical design it reflects ceru- lean blue lights. And at the bottom of the illus- tration is an evening slipper of green crepe de chine trimmed with contrasting bands of light green and gold, while next to it is an envelope bag of silk cord in two tones. The Letter Box ercerr® Haileybury, Aug. 22, 1928 Dear Sir :-- Through the courtesy of your esteemed paper, The Haileybur- ian, permit me to quote a few lines. Within the last twelve months my atention has been called to Home Industry, "Buy at Home," "Help Your Local Merchant, he Pays Taxes" has been the cry. Gentlemen, this is all good and well, BUT, let our iocal merchants look at us not as beasts of prey, but as human be- ings trying to pay our way and then our disposers of eatables will have no cause for complaint. For example, a resident of this town since 1908 entered one of our| local groceries, having no cash in} pocket he asked the clerk before buying a few articles, amounting to about two dollars, for which he asked the same clerk if he could cash a cheque for him. The clerk O.K.'d the transaction, and when the goods are all wrapped up the buyer takes his pen to make out a cheque for $3,00--his own personal cheque, and the owner of the store cancels the order and absolutely. refuses to cash or accept the cheque. This gentleman is an example of home industry in this town. This mer- chant seems to be unaware of the penalty which is made to anyone who issues a cheque on any bank without funds to cover same, If our merchants do not want our trade, let them close their doors, or else let the people buy their goods from whom and House Slips From Posts and Drops Into Cellar The home of Mr. E. Blair, View Street, was the scene of a peculiar accident on Friday last when the house, which had been raised up in preparation for the building of a stone foundation under it, slipped from its posts where they wish, without calling on high heaven to witness the rotten deal they are getting. I and my brother consumers are humans and not beasts, and do not have to put up with the slurs and slights which are handed out to us by such merchants as my example shows. Although Mrs. Blair and one or two other members of the family were in the house at the time, they all escaped injury and the building was not damaged to any great extent. One of those in the home was Jimmie, who is unable to walk through a recent injury. It is thought by those in charge of the work that a defective jack was responsible for the .accident. The jack had been left to sup- port one corner of the building, the remainder being held up with temporary posts, and it is believ- ed that it slipped. One side of the building went down well into the excavation, giving it a list which caused the crockery and glassware in the cupboards to be thrown out and part of it broken. The chimneys of the house were smashed, but there was little fur- ther damage, although the extra work of getting the building up to its proper level-again was of considerable extent. At the time of the accident timely assistance was given by anumber of men employed on the paving of Rorke Avenue and also_by neighbors in the vicinity. Since then the building has been restored to its proper level and the work of building the founda- tion walls is proceeding. a The Coliseum at the Canadian National Exhibition is the largest exposition building in the world, covering 16% acres.
