THE RHYMING OPTIMIST L__By Aline Song of the Twilight Riding into the twilight, Into the fading West, Into the dying splendor Over the low hills' crest, We merge with this transient beauty, One with the Earth's paling licht. Riding into the regions Made for the sea and night. Riding into the twilight. Leave Life's passion and pain, Watching the night descending Over the coastal plain. Riding into the twilight, Casting away old cares, Loosing the bonds Earth fashions Gladly the spirit fares! Rainbow-Gold A child, he sought the pot of rain- bow-gold, That fabled fortune which old tales have told Lies waiting there Where bright hues flare With vivid banners up the sky unrolled. The rainbow-gold, through all his childhood days, Kept luring him, kept beckoning always; But now at last, With childhood past, He gleans true riches from the tainbow's rays. He knows all gold the rainbow has for man Is in the beauty of that airy span, Its promise bright, Its lifting light, The whisper of its hope since time began. | Prize Drawings Are Seen by Many While On Display in Store Many people have viewed the prize drawings on display at .Thorpe & Branchaud's store in the last few days. These are the ones that were awarded first prizes at the Western Canada Art | Show held in Brandon, Man., a couple of months ago, artd have been admired by the people here since they were placed on dis- play. The artists are Mr. B. W. Hartley, of Haileybury, and Mr. E. Hicks, of Cobalt. Both do drawing as a sideline and from ;the display shown and the prizes won, both might be classed a- mong the clever artists of the Dominion. Two crayon drawings by Mr. Hartley are in the exhibit. For these he was awarded first prize in the amateur and professional class and first in the amateur open at the Brandon exhibition. For Mr. Hicks' pen and ink draw- ings, of which there are several in the display, he was awarded a diploma in a competition open to all art schools in Canada. Those who have not seen the collection should make it a point to visit the store before the drawings are removed. ee The Agricultural Section of the Canadian National Exhibition of- fers prizes totalling approximat- ely $100,000. Over twice as many people at- tend the Canadian National Ex- hibition as attend any of the Un- ited States Agricultural Fairs. Says Town Might Build Walks Into Timber Limits One of our subscribers came into the office last week to regis- ter a kick against the town coun- cil. \ He stated that they were perfectly willing to build side- walks in almost any section, but when they reach the edge of a timber limit they come to a full stop. On enquiry as to the particular location of the delinquency, we learned that he was referring to the sidewalk on Broadway Street and that he had just come from the market. The walk was built to the Matabanick Hotel and the balance of the street, where some property belonging to Gillies Bros. has the frontage, was left vacant. The gentleman thinks the gap should have been filled for the convenience of the mar- ket patrons at least.
