9 j H i t Guesses on Ice Must All Be Received by Saturday, April 6th The closing date for The Hail- eyburian's annual guessing con- test on the date of the ice going out of Lake Temiskaming' is Saturday next, April 6th. Read- ers should make sure that they do not overlook the opportunity to s@ure their Haileyburian for thé next year free of all charge. It is a simple matter to fill in the coupon below with the date on which you think the lake will be clear of ice, and either bring it in to the office or send it by mail. There are no restrictions, other than the fact that only one guess will be accepted from any reader and only one subscription will be given in any one family. Different members of a family may enter the contest. i This annual contest is almost as old as The Haileyburian it- self. On different occasions in the past there have been a num- ber of persons successful in nam- ing the right day in advance and some readers have won out on more than one occasion. There is no rule by which the weather can be acopirately foretold, but there are many signs that may prove of assistance, and the table below gives the dates for the past thirty years. The reason that the closing date is fixed early in April is the fact, made evident by the record, that the earliest date for the lake to be clear, since the records have been kept, was April 12th. Again we remind all readers that the time is drawing near when the contest will close, and they should not delay. The Good Friday services were also well attended and the observance of the great Church Festival was carried out with the usual solemnity. In each Church_ there special sermons preached, all bearing on the great theme -- of the Resurrection and the major- ity of the local people appeared to take a deep interest in the fes- tival. Particularly pleasing were the decorations, the beautiful Easter lilies being displayed pro- minently in every Church and other flowers lent a touch of springtime that was enjoyed by To Talk Over Plans For Providing New Children's Shelter The next meeting of the Child- ren's Aid Society will be held on Friday, April 12th, at' 8 p.m., in Hotel Haileybury. This~ will be a combined meeting of the District Society and the Hailey- bury Branch and has been fixed for this date in order that the two. Organizations may get to- gether for a further discussionof the problem of a new Shelter. It has been apparent for some time that the present building must soon be replaced in order that the good work may be properly car- ried on and it is hoped that at this meeting there will be some defi- nite plans made. The meeting will not be con- fined to members of the Society, all who have any interest in the work will be welcomed, and it is all. 4 ' : hoped that there will be a good The Good Friday holiday was attendance. A further announce-|to all appearances spent quietly. ment will be made later. The weather was fine, but the spring not far enough advanced to allow of much outdoor enjoy- ment. The roads were fairly clear of snow however, and many motorists took their first drive of the season. were Spring Weather Has Setback When Storm King Hits District The fine spring weather got a setback on Sunday night and Monday, when the district was treated to one of the biggest storms of the whole winter. A decided drop in temperature took place. on Saturday night and, al- though Easter Sunday was fair, it was cold throughout the day. Sunday night the change came and on Monday morning a bliz- zard was in progress. The snow fell heavily and, with the strong wind which blew steadily from the north throughout the day, made it very disagreeable. Streets were almost blocked and the snow eplows were out early on Tuesday, giving some relief in the morning. Snow shovels which had been stowed away last week in the belief that the winter was over, were again put into commission and paths and walks were cleared. The storm died down Monday night, and, although it was still cold on Tuesday morning, the change came again later in the day and by afternoon the snow was melt- ing fast and water commencing to run on the streets. Weather sharps are agreed that this was the last storm of the season. Want Ads.
