THE HAILEYBURIAN THURS., OCTOBER 3lst, 1929 Page 4 THE HAILEYBURIAN| Issued every Thursday from the Haileyburian Office, Broadway Street, Haileybury Published in the Interests of the Town of Haileybury and District of Temiskaming SUBSCRIPTION RATES: In Canada--$1.5U. per year in advance In United States--$2.00 per year in advance LEISHMAN % SUTHERLAND, PUBLISHERS Extra Care Needed | of Property To-night Keep Doors Locked and Aviat! the Police in Preventing Hallowe'en Damage While all possible precautions | will be taken to ensure that the| damage 'usually committed on| Hallowe'en by those who have a} mistaken sense of humor, it pointed out by police officers that | residents should exercise a little| extra care tonight. There will! be special police engaged and an effort will be made to reduce the pranks to a minimum, but it is| impossible for a compartively | few men to cover all parts of a town so wide spread as Hailey-} bury. In the past there have} been complaints of damage done} that was serious enough in some | cases and it is hoped to avoid this to the greatest possible extent. | This is written at the request} of the chief of police and includ ed a warning to those who find| some amusement in making free with other people's property that they will be dealt with| if they are caught. is | severely All citizens are also requested | to the police by making} sure that their doors are fasten-| ed and that no articles of value | are left lying around where they | may be-found by the jokesters. A great inany of the pranks committed are of a harmless na- ture, but in many cases the dam- age is serious and the citizens can do considerable towards pre- venting this. It can also be im- pressed on the youth that they should avoid doing harm when they are out celebrating and thus perhaps save themselves serious trouble later on. assist Temiskaming Again Goes Strongly Tory (Continued trom Page 1) mity in all parts of the constitu- ency, is taken by local party lead- ers as indicative of district ap- proval of the records of the Fer- guson administration and the lo- cal representative, The campaign in Temiskaming was somewhat quieter than in other elections and was conduct- ed on a high plane, with a total absence of rancor and personali- ties. It is generally admitted that the Liberal candidate, Mr. Byam, put up a vigorous, gentle- manly fight. He was defeated by a member whose record in the Legislature has been without a blemish, in an election culminat- ing in a Conservative avalanche throughout the province. ; Scenes of tumultous enthusi- asm marked Mr. Kennedy's vic- tory in New Liskeard, when crowds thronged the streets on election night and a procession of more than fifty automobiles fol- lowed the re-elected member on a triumphal journey to Hailey- bury and Cobalt when his victory was conceded. Mr. Kennedy heard the returns quktly at his home in the early part of the ev- ening, then went to the Liberal- Conservative committee rooms, where he received a great recep- tion. Cheering crowds, the din of cowbells and automobile horns and the congratulations of the townsfolk indicated the popular sentiment in favor of his return to the Legislature, and it was some time before Mr. Kennedy could break away to go on to the other towns, there to thank the electors for the confidence they had displayed in him. HAILEYBURY GIVES KENNEDY MAJORITY (Continued from Page 1) said Mr. Kennedy. "I'm sure I am thankful to the electors of this town and of the entire rid- ing for the splendid support they have given me. Perhaps, next time, they'll have to get another man. In the meantime I want to say that I'm sure I'll never be able to repay the people who have elected me, but that I hope to do all I can for the citizens of A. J. KENNEDY, M.PP. Mining Court Sits Here Temiskaming Wednesday, November 6th -- A sitting of the Mining Court, under Mr. Justice Godson, will be held in the court house here on Wednesday, November 6th, commencing at 11 a.m. Up to this week four cases have been listed for hearing. The first on the list is the Barry Hol- linger Gold Mines ys., Theophil- ous Olsen, and is described as an application to denosit talings, etc., in a creek or stream. John Burke and Frank McDon- ald are the; principals in the sec- ond action, the former making application for an interest in mining claim 120326 in Gillies' Limit. J The third case on the list 1s that of Lorne Teeple vs. George Whitton. It is a dispute over two claims in Bryce Township, and a similar action is involved in the fourth case concerning a claim in Catherine Township, in Follow Me, Girls! Spent Pleasant Evening at Mrs. Brewer's Birthday Party A very enjoyable time was spent at the home of Mrs. J. Brewer, Browning Street, on Friday evening last when a party of neighbors gathered to honor her on her birthday. There were several out-of-town guests who came to wish Mrs. Brewer many happy returns of the day and ex- press the hope that she would be many more birthdays. Refreshments were served and Temiskaming while I am aheic| One Incident Mars \ representative." Thomas Magladery, former M. Er nied Mr. Kennedy and was called upon for a few words, amid shouts introducing him as "the next member at Ottawa." "It's great to be down here with a Haileybury crowd again to see the eagle of victory perch- ed on the Conservative banner," declared Mr. Magladery. "We have them on the run, without a doubt. When the next Federal election comes around, get a man from Haileybury and lick Mac. Lang!" This sentiment created much enthusiasm. When a telegram was received at 11.30 to the effect that the Conservatives were conceded 92 seats and when a tabulation of returns indicated that Northern Ontario would send a solid Tory representation to the next Legis- lature, the crowd in the commit- tee room dispersed. One man, evidently satiated by victory, ven- tured the opionon that this was "rubbing it in too much." Mrs. Brewer was made the recip- ient of several costly gifts, which she received with thanks, expres- sing the hope that all would be present on her next birthday.
