LOCAL VETRANS BEAT LISKEARD COMRADES IN CRIBBAGE GAMES In the first cribbage contest of the season, between the war vet- erans of MHaileybury and _ their New Liskeard comrades, played one evening last week at the farming town, the men from here scored a substantial victory, win- ning 14 out of the 20 games play- ed. A return match is being ar- ranged and, while the local vet- erans are known to be experts, they are by no means certain that they can hold this record. In regard to last week's con- test, one hears vague accounts of someone counting a hand with "19" and one of those present ev- en went so far as to call at this office and attemptto demonstrate on paper, how it was done. He was told that further proof would have to be forthcoming if the story was to be believed, howev- er, and up to the present that} proof has not been produced. Survives Husband By Only Eight Days Mrs. W. H. Jeffery passes in Toronto on Tuesday; left here on Sunday Just eight days after the death of her husband, Mrs. W. H. Jef- fery, for over twenty years a res- ident of Haileybury, passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Davis, in Toronto on Tuesday morning. Haileybury friends re- ceived the news of her death on Wednesday by letter from the city and, although she had been in feeble health and suffered greatly from the shock of her husband's death, it came very un- expectedly. Mrs. Jeffery had gone to Toronto on Sunday even- ing to stay with her sister there. The late Mrs. Jeffery had been a resident of the North Country since 1907, when she came here with her husband in the days of the silver boom at Cobalt. She was well known to a large circle of friends and highly respected by the entire community. The death of Captain Jeffery the pre- vious week proved a great blow to her and, although she bore it bravaly, it proved too great for one of her age and feeble health. The funeral is being held in Toronto this afternoon, accord- ing to word received by friends here yesterday. NOTICE! A list of all delinquents had been prepared and each case was taken up separately and dealt with on its merits. While no public announcement of the proceedygs was made, it is understood that in the major- ity of cases a satisfactory ar- rangement was arrived at. Inno case where it was shown that a householder was making~an hon- est attempt to keep his payments up was there any harsh treat- ment. All who found themselves in difficulties were given an op~ portunity to prove their good in- tentions and it_is expected that only in a very few instances will drastic action be necessary. Want Ads.
