Page 2 THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, MAY Ist, 1930 Has Souvenir Book Over a Century Old George Poppleton Unearths An Interesting Relic Which Survived Big Fire An interesting relic of the past century was unearthed recently by Mr. George Poppleton and brought to the office of The Hail- eyburian. It is an old souvenir memorandum book, published in London, England, in 1917, and be- longed originally to one of Mr. Poppleton's ancestors, just which one he cannot definitely recall. Ihe book was in his safe at the time of the big fire in 1922, but came through the conflagration with little damage. Since that time it has remained in the safe and has become dampened to some extent, but is still in a good state of preservation, although yellowed with age. The first pages of the book are left partly blank and ruled for notes, two pages being devoted to each month with a line for each day. At the top of each page is an illustration, and in- cluded in these are pictures of famous castles, cathedrals and other scenes in the Old Land, in- terspersed with drawings of his- torical subjects. About half of the book is devoted to this pur- pose, the other half containing general information of that day and generation. A calendar, or "almanack" as it is listed in the index, for the year is much the same as might be published at the present, with the exception that the church festi- vals are more prominently dis- played. The book also contains alist of the Kings and Queens, from William the Conqueror to George III, giving the years of their reign up to the final King, whose name is followed by "Whom God Preserve." There is a list of Mail Coaches giving the different routes out of London with the time of leaving, apparently covering all important points in England and as far north as Inverness, Scotland. The coach line to Portsmouth, run- ning through Guildford, Godal- ming, Liphook, etc., recalls to the Canadian ex-soldier many familiar scenes. Members of the House of Commons, the Archbishops and other notables are given, as well|* as long fut of the nobility froth "earls and dukes down to the more humble baronet. There are list- ed the great law officers, both British and foreign ambassadors, governors of British settlements, etc., and a fund of information valuable at the time. Some notes in the handwriting of Mr. Popple- ton's ancestor give the personal valué to him prizes it highly. Inside the cover is one of Mr. Poppleton's own mementoes, in the form of a copy of the "Order of Parade Service (Church of En- book a and he Clover Valley News Quite a number are suffering from severe colds at present. Our new teacher, Mr. H. A. Dilwort, arrived on Sunday. He came part way by motor, but had to finish his journey by train. This was a special ser- vice for Coronation Day, June 26th, 1902, and was attended by Mr. Poppleton while serving in the South African War. The op- ening hymn was "O, God Our Help in Ages Past," and a procla- mation naming "Edward, the Son of Her Majesty the late most gracious Queen Victoria, as our undoubted King" was read by the minister. These relics of a by-gone age are very interesting and are be- ing carefully preserved.
