At two points in Lorrain there were rather bad blazes, one near Vahey's farm on the Lorrain Road, which, before it was finally overcome reached within 50 feet of the farm house. There was some, damage done to fences, etc., but it was not seri- ous and the buildings escaped. Another fire in the same sec- tion crossed the right-of-way of the new transmission line of the Canada Northern Power Cor- poration, between the Upper Notch and the Old Mission, burn- ing some poles, according to re-}, ports from that se¢tion. When these two fires were at their height a call was sent in for the forestry men of this tm- mediate district, but they were out in Firstbrook township fight- ing a blaze there which had be- come threatening. All available help was secured for the fighting in Lorrain and the fires were got- ten partly under control before night. The wind went down in the evening, the night remained calm and by Monday morning the greatest of the danger had pass- ed. The fire rangers 'went to Lorrain on Monday, after the Firstbrook fire had been control- led. There have been some rather serious fires "in Nipissing district and the Forestry men there have been kept busy during last week. On the Quebec side_of Lake Temiskaming there was consid- erable smoke to be seen from here on Sunday, but no serious conflagrations have been report- ed. It is thought that-land clear- ing operations were chiefly re- sponsible. e The warm weather has dried woods to a great extent e is an ever-present dan- ich will continue until it Tains some or the leaves reach the where they will afford pr Too much care can- ercised by all Who go o the bush. Some woodsmen are expressing the opinion that this is gojng to be a bad summer for fires.
