Child is Killed father Injured As Team Bolts Carried Dead Child With Him in Search for Help After Tragedy To have his only child killed in- stantly and to receive injuries himself that necessitated his re- moval to hospital for treatment, fwas the sad experience of William Schaffner, a farmer in the Engle- hart section, on Thursday after- noon last, when his team, which he was driving into town ran away on a steep hill about two and one-half miles west of the town. The child, a six-year-old boy, also named William, was accom- panying his father to town in a democrat, when a wheel of the vehicle stuck in a rut on a wind- ing hill. The team bolted and threw both father and son out and under the wheels. Mr. Schaffner picked up his child, not being aware of the fa- tal nature of his injuries, and started to go for help, when a neighbor happened to drive up and rushed both to Englehart. The boy was dead, his neck being broken and one leg fractured, and the father was sent to the Red Cross Hospital for treat- ment. Provincial Constable F. Devlin, stationed at Englehart, investi- gated the tragedy and reported the circumstances as he learned them to Crown Attorney F. L. Smiley, K.C. No inquest will be held, the facts of 'the case, ac- cording to the constable's inves- tigation, being clear. Mr. Schaff- ner's injuries are said to be not particularly serious. Want Ads.
