- < -THURSDAY, JULY 3rd, 1930 THE Page zy Flood Damage in Haileybury Was Worst For Years 'Storm Sewers Overflowed and Cellars Flooded; Pave- ment Covered Considerable damage was done in Haileybury by the big rainfall of Thursday and Friday morning. In many places the storm sewers overflowed and hundreds of yards of earth, gravel and stones were carried down the slopes and in some cases deposited on the pavement of the main highway. On Ferguson Avenue the over- flow carried gravel from the side streets and from the upper stretch south of Main Street, spreading it over the pavement in the block between Main and Broadway. The surface of Latchford and Brewster Streets was badly dam- aged, the gravel being washed off and carried: down the hill. On Latchford Street a washout oc- curred when a section of the roadway was carried out. The biggest deposit of material was on the pavement on the Lake Shore road where Foster Street The force of the water joins. coming down the hill cut a trench about seven feet deep down the hillside at the north of the Erenhous residence, carrying tons of the material right out on the pavement. A number of men were engaged during the greater part of Friday clearing this material, and incidentally fill- ing in a small washout on the Nipissing Central tracks which had occurred at the same time. In various sections of the town cellars were flooded, in a few cases giving considerable trouble and doing some damage. In the southern section the home of F. Dempster, on Meridian Avenue, suffered the worst damage re- ported, being badly flooded. It took some three hours before the trouble was overcome. The F. M. Connell residence in the north end had a flood in the basement that required pumping out. The majprity of the culverts and small bridges in town stood 'up under the strain, but the bridge on Meridian Avenue on the road to the cemetery went out completely. By Friday even- ing the greater part of the dam- age had been repaired.
