The safety of all people at New Liskeard Graham Kearney is Only One to Finish Long Grind For White Trophy Graham Kearney, 16 year old Haileybury boy, won the George White Swimming Race at New Liskeard Beach yesterday, mak- ing fast time for the long grind in weather that was not ideal. The race is for the silver trophy donated some years ago by Mr. Geo. J. White and competed for annually This is the first time that the trophy has come to Haileybury and Graham is being congratulated on his _ success. The event was held as part of the Liskeard civic holiday sports. Only three swimmers entered for the race, all three being Hail- eybury boys. The others were Jack and Russell Poppleton, both good swimmers. They failed to go the distance, both being forc- ed out of the water before com- pleting the first of the three laps in the course. The winner how- ever, had no difficulty in going the distance and finished in good shape, suffering only slightly from the cold. The course was from the wharf at the beach to a point directly opposite, requiring three laps of approximately one and one half miles. Graham swam the first lap in 40 minutes, the second in 37 and the third in 32. The lake calmed down towards the finish making it easier going. He uses a crawl stroke. S. Guignard and Jimmie Williamson acted as his escort. Among other sports held dur- ing the afternoon was a half mile race, in which two Liskeard boys, Durrell and Allen, had a close fin- ish, the former winning by a small margin. Fled From Burning House Clad Only in Blanket Clad only in a blanket snatched from his bed, James Piche, an el- derly man living alone in a frame house at West Cobalt, was forced to flee from his home at 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, when fire from some undetermined cause destroyed the two-storey build- ing. He was awakened by smoke only to find. that the flames had gained such headway that he had no time to save even his clothing. Other buildings in the neighbor- hood were threatened by the flames, but they were kept from spreading. The Piche home and contents were a total loss. Mrs. Meaney and Family Now Settled in Montreal Mrs. W. J. Meaney and family have removed to Montreal, where they have settled in a new home, after many years residence in Haileybury. Difficulties exper- ienced here were responsible for their leaving town and it is be- lieved that they now have a good home in the city. Two of the younger boys, Ivan and Bob, who »have been on a farm near Guigues for some weeks, will join their mother shortly in the city, ac- cording to Mayor Hamilton who, with other members of the coun- cil, has been looking after the family. To the generous citizens who have donated clothing and other SCHOOLBOY "HOWLERS" SOMETIMES OCCUR IN EVEN BEST CIRCLES From time to time one hears of what have come to be known as "Schoolboy howlers", but the us- ual inclination is to consider them as a figment of someone's imag- ination. They do occur, however, and sometimes in the best educa- tive circles, as is proved by a man engaged in educative work in our own North Country, where we fondly believe that the young are taught in the very best methods and are never found lacking when it comes toa test. Two exam- ples are submitted by our infor- mant, In the first he came upon a student who, in setting out the 'circumstances of a tangle in the government of the country spoke of it as a "dead lot." Although he evidently meant to write dead- lock, he may have been near the truth, depending on which party you are affiliated with. In the second example the stu- dent of parliamentary affairs 'spoke of the coalition govern- ment as the "collision" govern- ment, a term that might also be suitably applied to some adminis- trations, even in this enlightened country. Here's the man who will be fishing guide for President Hoover during the latter's vacation sojourn in Glacier National Park. He is Gus Thompson, formerly a pitcher on Pittsburg, St. Louis and Boston teams, now a professional guide and one of the best fly casters in the Rocky Mountain region things for this family, the town council wishes to express pub- licly its appreciation. "Just a word as to the differ- ence between Western Steer Beef and local Beef. Every piece of the former is Government In- spected and must be free from all disease and fit for human con- sumption and bears the Govern- ment stamp that it has been so inspected. It is slaughtered in a sanitary Abattoir and immediate- ly placed in cooling rooms where it remains till shipped in Refrig- erator cars to its destination. On arrival here it is placed in our Cold Room which keeps it in per- fect condition till sold to the cus- tomer. Local Beef is picked up around the country by buyers, killed per- haps on the Barn floor or any old place, hauled to the market in trucks and wagons none too clean and where it is exposed to dust and other impurities until sold. It is not inspected for disease-- in fact many a local animal has been turned into beef to save its life, so to speak. Now, which would you, as a discriminating housewife sooner buy? You pay a little more for the Western Beef, but is it not worth it?
