Page 4 THE HAILEYBURIAN THURS., NOVEMBER 20, 1930 THE HAILEYBURIAN Issued every Thursday from The Haileyburian Office, Broadway Street, Haileybury SUBSCRIPTION RATES: In Canada--$2.00 per year in advance In United States--$2.50 per year in advance LEISHMAN ®% SUTHERLAND PUBLISHERS New Book for Prospectors The Canadian Geological Sur- very, Department of Mines, has ready for distribution a volume that should be highly valued by prospectors in particular, and should be favorably received by all others interested in the min- eral development of the country. The prospector of today is better fitted than the prospector of 20 years ago to carry out a systema- tic search for mineral deposits. He has attained this fitness by a process of self education com- bined with experience in the field and today most prospectors are familiar with the technology of minerals and rocks. The new book, "Prospecting in Canada," was written to help the prospec- tor further his education and to serve as a key to the hundreds of maps and reports of the Dom- inion and Provincial Departments of Mines. The care given by the Department to the preparation of the material indicates its appre- ciation of th e excellent work done by the prospector in devel- oping Canadian mineral deposits. The various chapters have been written by officers of the Geolog- ical Survey who have specialized in different branches of geology and through personal contact with the prospector are well ac- quainted with his problems. They are accordingly qualified to pass to him the benefit of their train- ing and experience. The photo- graphic and structure section il- lustrations are a fit complement to the descriptive matter. Final year mining and geology students who contemplate en- gaging in field work upon gradu- ation will find this work of ex- cellent practical value and be- cause of the standing of the au- thors, should have no hesitation in using it as a guide in their studies. The book is not intended to supersede other excellent contri- butions made by men well known to the mining fraternity of Canada. What these several publications have in common is «kere dealt with in such different fashion "that there seems to be plenty of room for all on the same bookshelf." Copies of "Prospecting in Can- ada" may be had from the Direc- tor, Geological Survey, Depart- ment of Mines, Ottawa, at a cost of fifty cents each. The Brokers' Sentences Local mining men are bitter in their expressions of disapproval of the action of the courts in al- lowing two of the brokers, pro- secuted recently for infractions of the Security Frauds Preven- tion Act, to get off with fines. They feel that it is yery disap- pointing, and point to the fact that pleas of guilty of bucketing were entered by the accused, holding that this automatically made them plead guilty to theft from thousands of their clients. It is being put this way: "Bucketing can only be prac- tised on margin trading. These brokers admitted to taking an initial payment of 33 1-3 to 50 per cent. of the value of an order placed with them for the pur- chase of stock, placing the money or security so given them by the customer in a bank for their own use; charging the customer a commission for a purchase which they did not execute, charging the customer interest on the un- paid balance of the supposed pur- chase price, and if the stock drop- ped in value, which generally happened owing to the class of Lors W. Haileybury boy who is a candidate from Temiskaming for Boys' Parliament Carlson Boy Candidates Seek Support in Coming Contest Address Trail Rangers of the Three Towns at Meeting Here Tuesday Night A joint meeting of the Trail Ranger boys from the three local towns was held on Tuesday night at the United Church here. Rey. Fred. Smith presided over the meeting which consisted of some 75 boys, ranging in age from 10 to 15 years. Lors Carlson, of Haileybury, and Jack Stevens, of New Liskeard, candidates for the Boys' Parliament for the District of Temiskaming, put forth their platforms to the boys security they were handing out to the public, the customer was required to give the broker more money to protect the account for the imaginary purchase, or to be sold out. For the fatter service another commission was again charged to the customer. "Theft is usually punished with jail sentences. Just why men admitting to multitudinous thefts running into millions of dollars, taken from thousands of people in the province, should be let off with very light fines, we cannot understand." and both spoke clearly and well. The coming election is to be held a week from Saturday, Nov. 22nd, and in remarks at the end of the speeches, Rev. Smith ask- ed all the boys that possibly could, to turn out and vote on election day. Everybody joined in the hymns which were shown on the screen with lantern slides by Mr. J. A .MacArthur, while Rey D. A. MacKeracher accom- panied on the piano. After both boys had spoken, a dainty luncheon was served by members of the two C. G. I. T. groups, under the supervision of their leaders, Miss Playfair and Miss Lang. A vote of thanks was tendered to the girls by one of the boys for their kind ser- vices. The meeting closed with the benediction.
