Promise of a contribution of $1,000 for the Soldiers' Memorial fund was received this week in a telegram from Mrs. D. A. Dun- lop. The Haileybury Chapter of the 1.0.D:E. has arranged to present a set of books of knowledge, with a case, to each of the Public and Separate schools. Chief Commissioner Jones, of Toronto headquarters of the Boy ~Scouts, is in the district this week, visiting various centre where Troops have been formed. W. Jj. Farrell, a former Hailey- burian living in Kirkland Lake, has in his possession the first re- ceipt for-a water bill ever issued by the town of Haileybury. In the intertown bonspiel, com- pleted late last week, New Lis- Matheson News Mr. Harry Medows left Tues- day for the big meeting in North Bay. Miss Mamie Johnson returned home after spending several days in Monteith. The mining classes will open here March 19th at 2 p.m., under the direction of Dr. E. M. Bur- wash. The town council held their regular meeting in the Court House on Monday evening of this week. A Settler's Meeting was called last Saturday in the Court House The meeting was opened shortly after 2 p.m., and about 30 farm- ers joined the association. Mr. T. Hall will represent the assoc- keard and Haileybury split the honors, each taking one of the two main events. E. E. Smith, of Haileybury, and A. E. Steph- enson, of New Liskeard, were the skips of the successful rinks. We feel confident that the Dom-~ inion will meet the Previncial House with reasonable support toward the Trans-Canada High- way and are in hope of having this question settled at an early date. This proposed work would be a great help to the unemploy- ed in the North and also a bene- fit to many of the pioneers. There are 979 paid up members of the Notrhern Ontario Settlers' Association, an organization formed last fall by farmers in the district of Cochrane, with head- quarters at Kapuskasing.
