Page 8 THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, APRIL 23rd, 1931 "Social and Personal } Mrs. J. Dickson left last night to spend a couple of days in Tor- onto on business. McKinlay's Service Station is the place to have your car thor- oughly greased. Mr. J. H. Murray left on Tues- day evening to spend a few days in Toronto on business. Mr. H. Holland-Hurst returned on Sunday after spending the past two weeks in New York on business. Mr. J. Walter Young, a former resident of Haileybury, was -in town from Toronto over the week-end. Mrs. Fred. Maguire and son, Donald, of Cochrane, are visiting the home of her mother, Mrs. J. Brewer, Browning Street. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Mayhew, formerly of MHaileybury, spent yesterday in town on their way from Noranda to Pembroke. Mrs. R. A. Bradshaw and her daughter, Miss Meta, returned to Haileybury after' spending the past three months in Sault Ste Marie, Ont. Hon. W. A. Gordon and Mrs. Gordon came up from Ottawa on Saturday to spend the week-end at their home here. They were accompanied from the capital by Mrs. Harry Sparks. While this part of the district was enjoying exceptionally warm weather early this week, snow fell along the line of the trans- continental, reaching a depth of two inches at Hearst and extend- ing east as far as Cochrane. The M.S. Keego, of the Ville Marie Navigation Company, is being prepared for the season's|N- operations. As the ship was thoroughly overhauled last year, only minor repairs and painting are required and she will be ready when the ice goes. Farmers of Temiskaming will gather at Earlton on Wednesday April 29th, to complete the or- ganization of an association, which aims at better marketing conditions in the district. A. J. Kennedy, M.L.A., and J. A. Sar- roll, chief of the co-operative and markets branch, will be present. Frost and Snow Bring Halt To Fine Spring Weather The fine spring weather of the past week has suffered a relapse and, following yesterday's rain, several degrees of frost and a slight fall of snow have changed things completely. While the cold is not severe, it is disagree- able. and a coating of icé on the sidewalks and streets makes the travelling difficult. The ice is still.in the lake and there is no announcement to_make in regard to the guessing contest. Mother Restored to Family If you asked the average happy and comfortable Ontario housewife what & gain of 49% pounds would mean to her, sne wouid probably look aghast @t the very suggestion. Supposs, however, sne were in the position of rs. Roverts, @ woman with a tamily of young cnilGren in a small Ontario town where there was "little to earn and many to keep," growing weaker and weaker from overwork and poy- erty, finally obliged to leave her little ones to friends and neighbors and de- take herself to the Toronto Hospital for Consumptives. Then began vhe long, long fight to put back the precious pounds, which to Mrs. Roberts and so many like her, mean milestones on the road to health. Thanks to ten months of good care, rest, nourishing food and ex- erienced medical attention, Mrs. oberts one day saw the scales reg- ister 149 -- a heppy gain from the 99% pounds she registered on enter- toa the hospital. yhere is she now? Back at home, joyously taking up the care of her family, and grateful for her restor- ation to health. A great work assur- edly, which needs much assistance from friends because poverty. and tuberculosis so often go hand in hand. Will you help, please? A sub- scription sent to Mr. A. E. Ames, 223 College, Street, Toronto, will be greatly appreciated. Development is Proceeding At Lignite Deposits Shaft Now Completed and Work Of Drifting Started; Will Take Out 500 Tons R. F. Dempster, who for some time past has been employed at the development of the lignite deposits in the Onakawana fields, is spending this week at his home in Haileybury, having come down for a visit after spending several months there. He states that the work of development is pro- ceeding steadily, with about 35 men employed and that 500 tons of the lignite will be taken out this summer, chiefly for purposes of making a thorough test of its qualities and ascertaining the best method of handling it. Mr. Dempster states that the shaft in the latest section to be tested has been completed and that already about 28 feet of drifting has been done on the coal seam. The necessary mach- inery for the work has all been taken in and the men are housed in comfortable camps. They did not suffer from the cold during the past winter, as the mild weather has been general and there was.no interruption to the work. A car of the lignite has been mined and shipped to Ottawa for testing and further shipments will be made. It is the intention, according to Mr. Dempster, to ship some of the lignite to Ger- many, where there has been long and varied experience in the handling of similar material and from where it is expected valu- able information will be secured as to treatmént, marketing, etc. Captain W. F. Fancy, an old timer of Cobalt, is in charge of the present development. The shaft is located about 30 miles from Coral Rapids, on the T. & Y. O. and the extension runs through a portion of the property being developed. Green lawns and budding trees were to be seen in all parts of the town over the week-end. The work was done by simply cutting into the em- bankment between the tracks and the higher street level and using the stone removed in the building of the steps. Very little extra material was required and, as the stones were simply em- bedded in the earth of the bank without mortar, the job was nof an expensive one. To Councillor Houston, chairman of the com- mittee which is in charge of the market, goes the credit both for the idea and the supervising of the work. 1 'Haileybury Lady Bereaved by | Sudden Death of Brother | - H ; | Mrs. F.
