Not only to the living is this tribute paid. The original idea, which arose in the heart of some- one who had experienced a moth- er's love and unselfishness, was that the memory of the mothers who had departed this life should be honored in some way as well. The custom has spread until to- day hundreds of thousands are observing it by one way or an- other, and all must experience some benefit from a partial real- rather one ised ization of what a mother's love means, or has meant, in their lives. He had only been ill a couple of weeks and up to near the end hope was entertained for his recovery. Johnnie was a pupil in the En- trance class in the Separate School and was a bright and pro- mising student. He is deeply mourned, not only by his bereav- ed parents but by many school- mates and boy friends in town. From the time of his death on Monday until the funeral yester- day morning the flag at the Sep- arate School was flown at half mast and at the funeral there were many floral tributes paid to his memory. He is survived by his parents, three small sisters and one brother, all of whom have the sincere sympathy of the community. The funeral was held yesterday morning from the Holy Cross Cathedral to the Roman Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Paul Cyr After an illness of some months times we haye not acceeded to the request, endeavoring to use our own best judgment. Anyway, during this period of world-wide depres- sion the people of almost every country seem to be under the spell of a sort of competition bogey man. Maybe, too, that this spell is the result of some kind of subconscious attempt to relieve unemployment. Down in the United States they are sitting it out in trees, harassing their soles in dancing marathons and disfiguring their faces in the fistic arena. Over in Europe both men and women are stretching their nerves and risking their lives in flying com- petitions over uncharted jungles and dangerous seas, swimming: the channel and parachuting from the clouds. Canada, too, under the same spell, is rushing pell-mell to "keep up with the Joneses."
