Their time for the six-mile run was 30 minutes, 21 seconds. Englehart lads again copped second place, 44 seconds back of the winners, while Haileybury, through an excellent last lap run by Keith (Spud) Valentine, cap- tured third place, and North Cob- alt had to be content with fourth. Haileybury's time was 31.52, 47 seconds' behind Englehart, and leading the North Cobalters by 9 seconds. The race was late in starting, not getting under way until nearly three o'clock, but the large crowd which had gathered to witness the event took the de- lay good naturedly, and waxed enthusiastic as starter Joe Isher- wood put the boys on their marks and sent them away. Kirkland led by two seconds at the end of the first mile, Walter Zaluski coming ina few yards ahead of Norman McPherson, North Cobalt, who in turn beat Harold Glassford, Haileybury, by four seconds. The Englehart runner, George Woods , was eighteen seconds behind the lead- er, Kirkland, though G. Davis, in- creased their lead in the second lap, with Aimo Wirta, their fifth runner reeling off the mile in 4.54 for the best time prize. Hail- eybury captured second best time when Keith Valentine running the final mile in the rain, marked up a 4.58 effort to win thunder- ous applause. Other good times were made by W. Zaluski, G. Davis, Johnny McKeown, © Kirkland Lake, Sid Edwards, R. Pilsworth and L. Sullivan, Englehart; N. McPher- son, North Cobalt, and Harold Glassford, Haileyburv. The 'home boys had a very young team, and had only been in training a short time prior to the race, and their showing was very encouraging. The boys are determined to have a team next year, which will cause new rec- ords to be made to keep their names of the big shield. Following are the runners and the times made: W. Zaluski 5. Byberg of North Cobalt, a 12-year-old youngster, was the baby of the race, but he will make the others step in a year or two, as he has a nice style and seems tireless. His size was all that was against him on Satur- day. Another boy who is going to surprise the folks is Robert Mc- Arthur, who ran for Haileybury, This boy has quite a number of years ahead of him in which he will still be eligible for the race and will be heard from surely. At the close of the event, the boys who competed, with their trainers and others accompany- ing them, were given a lunch at Hotel Haileybury, where they all apparently enjoyed a good plate of beans, cooked in the good old- fashioned way, and where the prizes which go to the first and second teams were presented. Each boy on the winning team jreceived a silver medal, suitably engraved, while bronze medals of the same size and style were awarded to those in second place. In addition to the shield and medals, a prize to the value of $5.00 in goods was given by Chief of Police MacGirr to the boy who made the fastest time for the mile. This went to A. Wirta, of Kirkland Lake, who completed his lap in 4 minutes and 54 sec- onds. He had a close rival for this honor in Keith Valentine, of the Haileybury team, who made the mile in 4.58. In presenting the shield and medals, J. T. Leishman told the visitors that he hoped that they had enjoyed the event as muchas those who sponsored it and prom- ised that it would again be held next year so far as could be seen at the present. Mr. C. H. Danard principal of the Kirkland Lake Public School, who accompanied the team from the gold camp, spoke briefly of the pleasure and satisfaction which they had en- joyed in competing and declared that the boys would again try to clip a few seconds from the time in the event. The Haileyburian wishes to again extend thanks to the good sports of the town who assisted in carrying out the race. The town council cheerfully gave per- mission to close the street for the time required, F. L. Fleming, Joe Police, A. P. Knechtel, Bert Ter- rill, Dune. Carmichael, Frank Lendrum, Joe Isherwood, Joe Marcella, Chief MacGirr and others gave their services to help handle the race and a large gath- ering of citizens witnessed the contest. The rain towards the end of the race caused little-in- convenience.
