THE Lx HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAYS JULY Sth, 193r Page 2 Holds Sarvied of Confirmation At St. Paul's Candidates Receive Laying on of Hands by Anglican Bishop of Algoma Right Rev. Rocksborough R. Smith, the Anglican Procese of Algoma, was in Hail- eybury over the week-end and at the morning service in St. Paul's Church on Sunday conferred the holy rite of Confirmation, the "Laying on of Hands", on a class of candidates presented by the rector, Rev. Canon Hincks. The church was well filled for the service and the solemn ceremony was followed closely by all. Bishop of Following the Confirmation service, His Lordship spoke earn- estly to the class in particular, and to the whole congregation. He told them that they should be proud of the Church of England, which had had its origin ina meeting of the twelve disciples after the ascension of Christ,| when they received the Holy} Spirit. From that time to the present the Church had carried on the work laid down by the Sav- iour Himself, and had progressed steadily under pefsecution. Bishop Smith pictured the Church with one hand stretched out and holding fast to the tradi- evening, Canon Hincks and Mrs. Hincks were at home to members of the congregation and their friends at the rectory, when Bish op Smith was an honored guest and where he met many members of the church in Haileybury. He is this week visiting other sections of this part of the diocese before returning to Sault. Ste Marie. NORTH COBALT PUPILS PASSED FROM JUNIOR SECOND TO JR. THIRD In a report of the promotion examinations in the North Cobalt public school, published in our last issue, a class of pupils who passed from the Junior II to the Junior III were not given full credit, as they were included a- mong those who had passed from the Senior II. One of the teach- ers has called our attention to this and we give here the list which should have been headed Steele Om| ce ule Honors--Irma McGrath, Billie 3arker. Passed--Margaret Treen, Hugh Shaver, Albert Hellens, Mabel Davis, Shirley Stoughton, Mar- garet Brown (on year's work). Those who passed from the Sr. II to Jr. II] were HectorFleury, Gordon Pirie and Arnold Fair- hurst, all with honors. Coming Attractions at the Classic Theatre, Cobalt With Buck Jones' new riding tions of the past, w hile with the} tricks, brand new leaps and falls other she reached forward and | that fairly take the breath away, grasped the things which chang-|and a stirring story chuck full ing conditions made necessary in| the world today. Throughout the} years, when the Church had felt inspired by the Holy Ghost, he! said, she had steadily progressed, until now there is scarcely a| moment of the day or night when | church bells are not ringing in} some part of the world. Speaking directly to the class which had been confirmed, the} Bishop outlined what their duties | towards the church should be,| under four different heads. First prayer, an outline of what should constitute their daily supplica- tions; second, the regular attend- ance at the service of Holy Com- munion, in order that they might receive the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; third, they should support the clergy and be true and loyal to them because they represent Christ on earth; fourth, they should do something to spread the gospel, which was the duty, not of the clergy alone, but of all members of the church. His Lord- ship made a very impressive plea to the young to observe and carry | out these phases of their religious life. The Bishop arrived in Hailey- bury on Saturday morning and was the guest of Rev. Canon and | Mrs. Hincks' at the rectory. He was the celebrant at the Holy Communion service in the church at 8 a.m. on Sunday. On Monday of bandits and shooting frays, "The Fighting Sheriff' which plays at the Classic Friday and Saturday, July 10th, 11th, will be more thrilling than any action picture shown here this year. Admirers of Charles Farrell are advised to attend the Classic Monday, Tuesday, July 13th, 14th where this popular screen star will play in "Body and Soul". He appears with a new leading lady, Elissa Landi, who is hailed as the aovie find of the year. Woman is man's greatest enig- ma, and if anyone doubts the wisdom of this time-worn adage a visit to the Classic on Wednes- day or Thursday, July 15th, 16th, where "Don't Bet On Women" will quickly set his mind at ease and afford him an hour of laughs at the expense of the male sex. The cast features Edmund Lowe, Jéannette MacDonald and Una Merkel, on the same program with Tallulah Bankhead and Clive Brook in "Tarnished Lady" Her It has a kick like 10,000 volts. That's Tallulah Bankhead. Now you'll know why all England idol- izes her. Timmins reports a plague of shad flies at the Mattagami Riv- er bridge and it is said by old timers that it is the first time that these insects have been seen there.
