Page 2 THE HAILEYBURIAN f THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1931 Recover Bodies of Two Drowned Late Last Week South Porcupi Man Missing for Weeks; Chicago Student Victim at Temagami The tragic finis that was writ- ten to a duck hunting expedition and to a fishing trip in widely separated parts of the district was revealed in two separate re- ports made to provincial police district headquarters in Cobalt at the week-end, when Inspector W. T. Moore learned officially of the finding of the bodies of Chris- topher Purnis, South Porcupine shoemaker who had been missing since the first day of September, and of William Wilder, Chicago medical student, who was drown- ed near Bear Island late last week. Purnis had not been seen alive since he left the camp he and his two adult sons had established near Connaught on the night of August 31, the eve of the opening of the duck shooting season. He left camp the following morning at daybreak, the police were told, informing his sons that he would return for supper, but no trace of him was found until his body was recovered from the Frederick- house river many miles from the carp by two men who chanced to pass that way. The body of Wilder was located in 54 feet of water late Saturday afternoon, dragging operations having been carried on all of that day and part of the previous one, after word of this tragedy had been brought out by the victim's com- panion, Charles Dunham, also of Chicago. Wilder and Dunham were on a fishing trip to the Temagami, dis- trict the police learned, and on (Thursday morning last, about three miles north of Bear Island, the canoe in which they were travelling was rough water. The young men struck out for the shore, about a quarter of a mile away, at Rabbit Point, but Wilder, when part way there, called to the other man that he could not make the rest of the distance. Dunham at- tempted to aid his companion, but Wilder, sank, and the other man was able to reach shore only with difficulty. Both were handicap- ped by the heavy clothing they were wearing at the time. The accident happened between ten and eleven o'clock in the morning, and Dunham, after reaching the mainland, managed to struggle through bush and rocks for two miles until he was able to attract the attention ofa man in a canoe, and was taken by the latter to Bear Island. The hour was then late in the after- noon. Word was sent to the po- lice, and dragging operations commenced on Friday, continuing until the body was located late on Saturday on a shoal. In the interval, the victim's father, a Chicago doctor, arrived from home, he and two companions travelling by automobile in 26 hours, stopping only for gasoline and taking turns at the steering wheel. Coroner Dr, Ranney, at North Bay, was notified and re- leased the body, according to the report of Constable Leland Walk- er. Wilder was 22 years of age. Oscar Genereux and Ernest Hamil were the men who found the body of Christopher Purnis, according to the information upset in BAILIFF'S NOTICE OF SALE FOR TAXES (Section 112, Chapter 238, R.S.O. 1927) Notice is hereby given that un- der and by virtue of a Warrant from H. The body was discovered in the river in Little township, north of Fred- erickhouse Lake, and subsequent- ly brought to Connaught, after Coroner W. J. Grummett, at An- sonville, had been notified. The coroner investigated, found no signs of violence on the body and registered death as due to acci- dental drowning. Constable Craik and the victim's sons identified the body as that of Purnis, who was familiar with the district, as he had engaged in duck hunting in that favorite resort of sports- men in other years.
