Page 6 THE BATE yeu RLAN THURS., OCTOBER 29th, 1938 Everyday Religion Vital Questions A Series of articles by the minis- ters ofthis district JESUS AND YOUNG PEOPLE or Are Young People Irreligious? By Rev. John Moore, B.A. Elk Lake We hear all too many charges that the young people of this modern era are pleasure-mad and irreligious. In my experience with young people in several cities and towns, I have found that such charges are ill-founded. At summer confer- ences, Y. P. Society meetings and even at social functions, I have discovered them deeply interested in religion. In fact, I feel that generally speaking, they are en- deavoring conscientiously to ap- ply the principles of Jesus-to the numerous perplexing problems which they are called upon to face. Is it not possible that the fault lies not so much with them as it does with ourselves? To an alarming extent, we have endea- vored to present to them solely the picture of a Saviour who liv- ed almost two .thousand years ago. We have failed, so it seems to stress the irrefutable fact that the Master not only lived almost two thousand years ago, but that He is living today. The text which we need is "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever". For that is the picture of the Christ which our young people are seeking today. And yet how we persist in depicting Him in"a strictly Palestinian set- ting amid conditions that were so vastly different from those of today. And, naturally, being in- telligent young people, living right up to the minute, they are finding it difficult to apply the teachings which are connected so rigidly with an ancient setting, to modern conditions. And ignor- ant of this problem of transition, we proceed to criticize them for not attending Church and for not showing sufficient interest in other Church activities. schools, This is merely a theory; but I) share the view of a prominent leader of a young men's Bible class: "Why attempt to take the young man back to Galilee when it is so easily possible for the One whom we would have | him meet by the shores of that} lake to come to London, to New} York and to Toronto?" To quote still further: "We don't want to so back, but we need Jesus to- day." The young people need Him; moreover they are seeking Him. But to experience His power in their lives, they need Him in a modern setting. And there is nothing heretical about that. Forif Christianity is to ex- ert the force of which only it is capable, it must be practical. It must be used today in all the problems which, both young and old, are called upon to face. And if these problems are to be solved successfully, they must be en- countered in the light of how the Master Himself would handle them, if He were present in the flesh with us today. To sum up, that is the practical conception of Christianity for which our young people are yearning. Consequently, che pic- ture of the Living Christ is t he one which we should never fail to present. The right way to get on in business is to set sales mark for the year -- $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000-- whatever is reasonable and within one's financial ability. Then the year's objective should be reduced to weekly and monthly amounts, in accordance with the season- al character of one's business. Then the next thing to do is to cal- culate the number of sales transactions needed each week to produce the weekly sales objective.
