In U.S.--$2.50 per year in advance Leishman & Sutherland, Publishers Should Take Advantage of the Swimming Classes Every child in Haileybury should take advantage of the swimming now being carried on under the auspices of the Rotary Club. A qualified in- structor, in the person of Carl Hutt, of Cobalt, opened the classes on Tuesday, under an agreement whereby he devotes two days per week to each of the three towns. The service clubs have combined in this work ol instruction for the young and it fe to say that no better ser vice could be rendered to the communities. On the intervening days a lo- cal man, Russell Poppleton, has been giving the children further instruction and from all appear- classes ances the classes are being well patronized. It would appear to be the duty of the parents to make sure that their children at- tend and receive some training in the art of swimming, diving, etc., which is not only one of the best of exercises but an art that may at any time prove of the greatest value in the saving of lives or the prevention of acicdents. Lo cal people are very fortunate in having such an organization as the Rotary Club, which is contin- ually seeking new methods of rendering real service to the community A word may well be said also, for the beach, which is fast be coming a favorite spot [he im provements already made and noy \ pt : boon to the town [here is now a fine piece of sand beach of am- ple size to accommodate all the bathers without crowding, the water is shallow at the shore and grows gradually deeper outside, so that there is plenty of oppor- tunity for the more seasoned swimmers to enjoy themselves, as well as absolute safety for the beginners. Why Do They Do It? Commenting on a story in our issue of last week, in which the Public School Board's resolution of regret at the resignation of the school principal after 45 years in the teaching profession was the subject, the Mail and Empire says that the Board's suggestion that he write his memoirs to show that people will sign a petition for anything." Just why anewspaper of the standing of the Mail and Empire should go out of its way to try and make a sarcastic comment out of a story of purely local interest seems hard to understand. In the story there was not a word about a petition, no suggestion other than words of appreciation of the services of a man who had done his work well, and the tribute of the was well deserved. One would surely be justified in expecting the Mail and Empire to use common courtesy in its comments on matters with which it is not at all familiar, or at least to read a story through before atempting to treat it with its so- called sarcasm. The Inspector's information tn- dicated that Lefevre and Par- quette had been out in the bush, but with different parties, and that the latter, sighting the other man 200 yards away. was misled by Lefevre's dark clothing into the belief he was an animal. He raised his rifle and fired. During last Tuesday night the post office at Swastika was bro- ken into and $35 taken, another message to the Inspector stated.
